"Freya? Did you hear me? What was the question?" I snap my head up, awakening from my daze only to be met by the fustrated face of my history professor.
"Hmm?" I hum in a questioning tone, making the professor in question, Dr . Wells, sigh turning back to the board at the front of the class room.
"What I asked was; What was the trigger cause for World War 1?" he repeats his self to me, which I'm guessing was only making him more fustrated with me.
"Oh, um, it was the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife." I mumble, not wanting to draw more attention to myself. Dr. Wells nods his head at my answer. "Good. But next time I ask you a question, I expect you to listen Miss Daniels." he said sternly, earning some snickering from students at the back of the room.
I slumped down in my seat, feeling my face begin to flush red. God, I wish Ash would have chosen history with me, he would have saved me half the embarassment.
I wasn't usually like this, daydreaming and not listening. I was usually fully alert and ready to learn, as ready as you can be on a Monday morning. I I've always been the shy girl of my year, the unassuming one with a few friends that kept herself to herself. I liked it that way.
I returned back to scribbling the notes I needed to take down in my book. Well, when I say 'returned' I mean just started. For some unknown reason, I was doodling nonsense all over one of the black pages. I definitely blame the fact that it was a Monday morning.
The bell chimed, signalling lesson change over which meant I had English with Ashton. Thank God. I clear away my stationary and my book, throwing a strap of my bag on my shoulder. I huff and walk out the door, immediately met with Ashton leaning against the lockers on his phone.
I cough awkwardly, making him look up from the screen and smile at me. "English?" he asked. As if he doesn't know his schedule half way through the year! I nod in response and we start walking down the corridor that was bursting with students making their own way to their next lessons.
"So how was class?" he asked, looking down at me. I shrug. "Okay, I guess. I wasn't really concentrating to be honest. I blame that it's a Monday morning." I explain, leaving out the minor embarassment I had caused myself.
"That's not like you! Who are you and what have you done with my Freya?" he jokes, throwing an arm around my shoulders and making me giggle. He a just the large framed glasses on his face as we make our way down the stairs with his other hand and messes his curly hair up a bit.
Ash on and I had been best friends ever since we could remember. We are more like brother and sister than best friends but he is the only one who really puts up with me.
Ashton is like a skyscraper compared to my height as I only reach up to just below his shoulder when I am next to him. He has hazel eyes and brown hair which is very curly and he is letting grow out now and the tiniest hint of facial hair if you look very closely. On some days he chooses to wear nerdy style glasses which are adorable might I add.
We finally reach our English class just as our second bell chimed. I followed Ashton, sitting at our usual spot together in the room. Once I sat down, I put my head in my hands, rubbing my eyes in an attempt to wake me up a little. "Are you sure you are okay? I had the flu last week. Did I give it to you?" Ashton asks.
I shake my head, "No, no im just tired. I don't think I got much sleep last night is all." I try to reassure him, flashing a lazy smile his way. He raises an eyebrow at me and I sigh.
"I'm fine!" I say slapping his arm in a playful way. The teacher, Mrs Tanner, walked in and the class fell silent, waiting for her to speak. She sat down at her desk momentarily sorting out her presentation.
"Right class," she bangs her hands loudly on her desk making half of the students (including me) to jump out of their skins, causing Ash to laugh at me a little and my to flush red. "We are going to do something very different in the next few weeks that I am hoping will get all of your grades up in time for exams." She continues.
Most of us sigh at that word that no student likes to hear ever, 'exams'. Mrs Tanner switches to a slide on her presentation with a list of names on that seemed to be in pairs, giving us no explaintion as of yet.
"This list I have produced will assign you to partners that you will have to work with for the upcoming weeks." She announces, gesturing to the list beside her. I hope me and Ash are partners. There is know one else that I know or get along with despite me starting at this college at the beginning of the first year like everyone else.
"You will see that I have paired you up with very different people that most of you at treatment probably used to," my heart drops and I don't even bother searching for my name anymore. "So the people at the bottom of the class, I have took the time to pair you with the people at the top of the class in hope to get your grades up for the exams and this project I am going to tell you about in a minute."
I hear groans coming from the back of the classroom where typically all the ones who are failing most classes sit, cliché I know. Mrs Tanner starts to read out names of partners, telling us to sit next to them. For some reason I am still hoping to be paired with Ashton.
I look at him and see that he us trying to search for his name that will hopefully be next to mine. "Freya Davis," my head snaps towards the front of the room.
" You will be partners with Luke Hemmings."
