MARIA : To be honest, they were really good. I couldn't take my eyes off them. I mean, sure, they were all good looking, maybe that was why? I kept telling myself not to take their picture. Film was expensive and I wasn't paid for it.
KARREN : I saw Maria suddenly stand up beside me. She brought the camera to her eyes and was looking through the view finder. She was going to take a picture of the group. I was quite surprised, she had never really been interested in any other band other than The Winters during a concert.
MARIA : Actually, I changed my mind. But I only took one picture of them. I just followed my instincts. I thought maybe the picture was going to turn out badly, so I didn't care about it too much. I did what I wanted to do. I had a great time. They were handsome and were playing one of my favorite songs, Suzie Q. Taking a picture is about capturing the moment, right?
INTERVIEWER : Did you notice that she was taking a picture?
EDDIE : I didn't. Not at all. I thought she had left because I didn't see her in the crowd. In fact, I didn't see her again that night. But I remember Billy saying a few days later, "What's this?" an envelope in his hands.
BILLY DUNNE (lead singer, Daisy Jones & the Six) : I opened it and everyone was amazed.
WARREN : My reaction was spontaneous, I had to say something like, "Guys, this is so cool! I love it!"
CAMILLA DUNNE (wife of Billy Dunne) : I added, "Wow, that's talented."
MARIA : I couldn't deny it, I was proud.
GRAHAM : You could see the hands of some of the spectators in the air. Billy at the front, his hair tousled. Warren and I close together, both smiling. And a piercing light from above illuminating Eddie on the left side.
BILLY : She was able to capture the atmosphere, and it couldn't have been easy. I don't want to say that Camilla was less good at photography, but it was different. Everyone knew it, even Camilla.
EDDIE : Art came from her eyes. You could say at the time that she had art in her eyes. She saw everything in a different way, turning things in a better way. But it didn't last.
MARIA : I asked Rod Reyes a few days before to give me the address of The Dunnes Brothers. He nodded without even asking me why. I knew he had confidence in me, in my work.
KARREN : I came home from rehearsal on a Thursday night. Maria was sitting in the living room. I asked her what she was doing and she said it was nothing important. I immediately noticed a photograph next to her and I remember her smiling, and she was right, it was cool. Then, before I left I saw that she was writing some words on a piece of paper. A beer in her hand. But I couldn't see what she was writing.
MARIA : I wrote : You're a great band ! / From the Winters' photographer.
EDDIE : I couldn't help but smile as I read those words.
WARREN : We still have this photo. The first and last photo as The Dunnes Brothers. I think it's in Eddie's apartment now.
MARIA : I wanted to give them a little something. A memory. My memory. I was sure I would never see them again, but I was wrong.
KARREN : They called me a few days later, apparently they were in Los Angeles and Rod Reyes had given them my apartment's number. Billy Dunne said, "Do you want to be in the band?"
BILLY : She didn't answer the question, instead she asked me, "Give me your girlfriend."
CAMILLA : Her voice was calm but dry. She knew exactly what she wanted, already determined for her career. She asked,"Be honest, are they worth it?"
MARIA : I didn't know who was one the other end of the phone that day, or what they were saying to each other. I was sitting on the couch right across from Karen smoking a cigarette, my pointy boots on the coffee table. The one and only sentence I remembered that day was, "Okay, I'm coming. And Maria too."
INTERVIEWER : What was your reaction when you heard Maria's name?
GRAHAM : When Camilla repeated Maria's name, we all frowned.
WARREN : At first, I was like, "Who the hell is Maria?"
EDDIE : Honestly, I didn't pay much attention, my head wasn't really focused on what was going on. I was smoking next to them, tapping my foot on the floor. All I knew was that Graham wanted to do everything he could to get the keyboardist in the band.
WARREN : Without warning, Eddie had exclaimed aloud, "We need the photographer."
EDDIE : My eyes were back on the photograph on the table. The words had come out of my mouth by themselves. The thought had crossed my mind so I spoke.
CAMILLA : I don't remember why I hadn't thought of it earlier that day. I mean, the night of the concert, the keyboardist was always glued to the mystery girl, her camera on her shoulder. It had always been Karren and Maria. I spoke up again, phone still resting on my ear, "She's the girl who took the picture of my boyfriend and his band?"
KARREN : I told her yes and she replied almost immediately, "Sure, come on girls!" Her smile could be heard on the other end of the phone.
MARIA : That same night, I was on the road, back in LA. I was about to step into a new adventure with my best friend Karren. It was bound to go well, wasn't it?
