MARIA : I took hundreds of photos a day, which I developed in the darkroom. Then I gave them to Camilla so that she could contact the newspapers. . . But nobody answered. It wasn't enough.
CAMILLA : I had considered giving up sometimes. So I shared my doubts with them as we all sat at the local café, hot chocolates at our table.
GRAHAM : And then Karen spoke.
KAREN : I asked why we were called the Dunnes brothers. Three of us were not Dunnes and, as far as I knew, I was not anyone's brother.
WARREN : Billy asked her why she wanted us to change our name.
EDDIE : I had to say, "That's a great idea," which earned a murderous look from Billy.
MARIA : Eddie was saying out loud what everyone else was thinking. And that, my god, was cool.
BILLY : At the time, I thought that with this name, people knew us. But I didn't want to admit to myself that it wasn't very helpful. You know, it's hard to admit to your group that you're wrong. I wasn't someone who would admit mistakes to them.
MARIA : When Eddie confronted his ideas, he was not impressed by a determined Billy. I agreed with them about changing the name of the band. However, I was too focused on drinking my hot chocolate that day to say a word. After all, I wasn't in the band.
GRAHAM : I thought Hercules might be an option [laughs].
KAREN : And so I asked them : What about The Six?
GRAHAM : I loved it as soon as she said it.
MARIA : The name "The Six" sounded good. They needed a strong band name, something that would get into your head, that would leave a mark on your mind.
GRAHAM : Maria and I always agreed with everything Karen said.
MARIA : And then it all started so fast. Billy had managed to get in touch with Teddy Price, I'm not sure how. They only had one chance and they made it. The Six, Silver Nail, man. Karen had called me on a Monday afternoon. I was developing photos in the darkroom. I remember picking up the phone so quickly that I had forgotten about my photo being left in the chemicals. Good news, they had succeeded. Bad news, my picture was messed up.
KAREN : We were finally starting to have some success, we were on the right track.
EDDIE : Maria and I didn't spend much time together. We hardly talked at all. I mean she was always with Karen or busy laughing with Warren.
MARIA : Those were not the most interesting months of my life.
EDDIE : When we talked together it was purely professional. She would tell me how to pose and sometimes I would show her how to play the bass. A gap had opened up between us for no reason.
MARIA : We were both very busy.
EDDIE : I don't know why we were so distant those months. Maria talked to Billy more than to me, and he wasn't the most fun of the bunch.
MARIA : A few weeks later, they were already recording an album.
WARREN : We were in the recording studio and Maria couldn't put her camera down for a moment.
EDDIE : Maria gave me hope. I mean, sometimes I wasn't sure about everything, but . . if you had seen her eyes that day, you probably would have thought the same thing.
MARIA : I didn't want to make a mistake again. If The Six failed, I would have to change jobs. Photography still didn't pay the rent and groceries. My parents stopped giving my brother and me everything we should have had. But I didn't care back then, I didn't need diamonds or cars. I just needed to be with them, but until when?
KAREN : Maria's smile disappeared every time she saw Eddie and Camilla together. Or at least I was the only one who noticed. She was good at hiding her emotions.
MARIA : He had his eyes on Camilla. Always. And I could tell by the way he looked at her. . .
EDDIE : Yes, to tell you the truth, I always had a soft spot for Camilla. She was pretty, kind and generous. But Maria. . . mesmerized me. It was completely different. I couldn't compare the incomparable. Anyway, I ended my teenage crush at Camilla Dunne's wedding.
KAREN : I was happy for Camilla and Billy. I really was. They were getting married and having a child.
GRAHAM : At their wedding party, there were lots of drugs, lots of alcohol and lots of people in love.
WARREN : Eddie thought Maria was not interested in him. She was intimidating, she was everyone's friend, she didn't let her weaknesses show, nor did she let her heart beat a little too hard for my buddy.
GRAHAM : Maria had been drinking heavily at the wedding.
KAREN : She had told me about her interest in the bass player from the first day. I remember she asked him to dance with her that night and he refused. In fact, he was the only one who didn't see the signs.
