"We don't know much about Scrapers, but Ash has been kind enough to fill in some blanks." Rosalind was walking down the gravel path between Specialists. They were lined up with bows in preparation for today's training, and they looked my way when Rosalind mentioned my name. "We know fairy magic is ineffective against them when used directly, which is why now is the time when the Specialists must shine."
"Now that I'm back, I'll be taking over ranged combat, the primary method of taking down the Scrapers. Let's see what you've got." Silva stepped forward, and he seemed to be settling back into his role at Alfea better than expected. "Are you sure you want regular arrows, Ash? They put you at a disadvantage."
"No offense, Silva, but I'm an Old Blood."
"As I can see." He nodded while looking at my exposed wings.
"I can do things most fire fairies you know can only dream of doing."
"Don't I know it." I heard Riven pop off under his breath, and I kicked his ass. "Ow!"
"Trying to be serious here, Riven."
"Shit, I didn't think you could hear me." He glanced around while rubbing where I'd kicked him.
"Are you sure you should be getting so cocky? Your magic is useless here." Silva continued while seemingly ignoring the interruption.
"Perhaps seeing what I mean will help explain it better." I said while nocking an arrow. Lighting the tip on fire, I pulled the string back. Letting it loose, I watched the arrow shoot through the air as I used the fire on it to control the direction it went in. I made the arrow shoot across the river before making a sharp turn to hit a leaf that had fallen.
"That does explain it better." Silva gave a short nod. "However, watch the attitude. I am a higher-ranked officer and your instructor for today. Show some respect."
"Yes, sir." Silva nodded once more in approval of my response, then stepped off to the side to let the training begin. Clay disks were sent flying over the river for us to aim at.
"It's like he never fucking left." Sky grumbled.
"Come on, man. Aren't we over this anti-Silva shit?" Riven asked while nocking an arrow.
"He acts like he has the moral high ground. Hypocrite."
"What, and you'd prefer Andreas?"
"Well, at least Andreas is who he is."
"Yes, and who he is is a massive prick. He almost took my arm off in sparring yesterday."
"I wonder if it's because Beatrix is gone. I heard Rosalind sent her on a courier mission, but when I tried to ask him about it, he pretty much told me to fuck off, so.... You don't know anything, do you, Riven?"
"Do you two usually spend training bitching about your insecurities and issues?" I popped off before shooting another arrow and directing it to hit two disks at once.
"It can be therapeutic." Riven drew back his bowstring while smiling.
"Do you even know what therapeutic means?" I chuckled, and he could tell I was simply messing with him. He fired and the arrow actually swerved to avoid the disk he fired at.
"For homing arrows, these fucking suck." Riven waved his hand, and Sky laughed.
"Sure, blame the arrows." Picking up another arrow, I looked up to see where the next disk was heading.
"You're not even using them, so hush."
"You're pulling the string back too far. Relax."
"I'm not-"
