Ava's finally able to do testing. We're testing out her shield.

[06:31]

Nelson, Lacy, and I stood, staring down at Ava.

Nelson, through PA: Okay, Ava. I saw what you were able to do in the radiation room when your family got trapped. Now, show me what else you got.

Ava scowled.

Ava: No. I'm immune to radiation. What good would it be to "protect" myself from it?

Nelson smirked, and I sighed, crossing my arms.

Nelson: Thought you might say that. Maybe this will change your mind?

I watched Gracelynn Rotea carry her two-year-old daughter, Willow, into the room murmuring something to Ava.

I blinked as I felt determination ripple off of Ava.

Ava turned to Nelson, glaring.

Ava, determined: Bring it on, Snake.

I watched Nelson flip the switch, Lacy taking notes. I just stood there, watching. Ava closed her eyes and held her hands out against the radiation. A bright red forcefield appeared, surrounding her and Willow. But, it was shaking. I saw her gaze turn to the Absalate and watched her focus. When she opened her eyes again, the shield was strong.

She sat down on the floor and began to play with the little girl.

Nelson and Lacy were shocked, as always, underestimating Ava Cobalt. I was smiling underneath the mask. My daughter is stronger than they will ever know.

Nelson, stunned: I think we need to do more testing with this.

Lacy, nodding: I agree.

I scowled, giving them a sharp look.

Benjamin: First, I think we should do Gracelyn a favor, and give her back her daughter.

Nelson nodded and shut off the radiation. Ava kept the shield up. She gently picked the small girl up, propping her up on her hip.

Once the radiation was gone, Ava's shield vanished, and Gracelyn ran toward Ava and Willow.

Gracelyn gave her one last smile, then rushed out of the testing room with her daughter. Ava sighed, and I leaned forward, concerned. She placed her hands on her knees, trying to keep standing. Keeping back radiation, seemed to take it out of her once she dropped the shield.

Ava? Are you okay?

Just... really... tired... Ben...

Are you going to black out?

No. But I am going to sit on the floor.

And she did, her breath heaving.

Nelson, PA: Ava? How are you feeling?

I struggled to keep a growl of annoyance back. I think that's pretty obvious, Snake!

Ava, out of breath: What are my vitals?

Nelson: They're fine. But you sound exhausted.

Ava, muttering: No shit. I held back a ton of radiation. I wonder why I sound exhausted?

I smiled. That's my girl.

Ava, louder: I am. How much damn radiation did you pump in here?

Nelson tried to turn off the microphone, but I still heard my voice echo throughout the testing room

Benjamin, muttering: Too much.

Ava smirked at my words, and I joined in, though Nelson will never know, thanks to the damn mask.

Lacy, hissing: Shut up.

Nelson, sighing: I'm sure you heard Ben's comment.

Ava: I did. And I agree with him.

I grinned.

Nelson: Okay. You can go back to your room, for now. We have a lot to go over.

Ava nodded and picked herself up. A door opened, and she left. I was glad they let her have some freedom. I knew she was too dedicated to her family to risk leaving.
