06:04

I sighed, I had been up since 04:00, and I was being ordered to bring Ava in for her physical and testing. The last thing I wanted to do was wake up a 16-year-old. I opened the door, and I found Ava sitting at the desk, a headphone in her fingers, staring at me. Her eyes had dark circles, that looked more like bruises, under them.

Ava, monotone: Benjamin.

Benjamin: Did you not sleep?

Ava rolled her eyes, and I knew I had my answer.

Ava: You think a kid can sleep after being yanked outta her home? You are crazy.

I sighed, then grabbed her arm. She followed me, willingly, as I took her to an exam room.

Benjamin: Wait here. Lacy will be in soon. If she tries anything at all, without Nelson or I present... Let me know.

Lacy was in a mood this morning, and I didn't trust her.

Ava just nodded. I left, passing Lacy. I needed to discuss our plans further with Nelson.

As I headed up the stairs for Nelson's office, Ava spoke.

Uh, Ben...? I'm getting threats.

And? You're lucky she likes you. By now, if you were someone else, let's just say hell would've been unleashed.

You know what? You're nothing more than a pathetic asshole. And you wonder why I hate you. And why Deb wanted nothing to do with you. Although, she's a manipulative murderer. So, I guess she doesn't count, does she?

You fucking bitch.

Yes. You called?

Get the hell out of my head.

Fine.

I sighed in relief, then I opened the door to Nelson's office and sat down.

Nelson: So, Benjamin. You know your daughter better than any of us. What do you think we should do?

I sighed, about to answer, then felt a sharp pain in my mind.

Ben!!

What?

Lacy's going to inject me!

What?! Hang on!

I looked to Nelson, then flipped on the cameras, and we saw Lacy, advancing on Ava with an injector.

I'm trying to stall!

I raced out of the room, the serum kicking in, giving me superhuman speed as I leaped down the stairs, two or three at a time, Nelson doing his best to keep up.

Keep going!

Too late, Ben.

My heart felt like ice, and I poured on the speed.

'Not again. God damn it, not again.'

I slammed the doors open, storming over to Lacy, Nelson following.

Nelson: What the hell, Lacy?!

Lacy stared at us in shock.

Lacy, stammering: I– I uh...

Benjamin, roaring: Enough!

I went over to her, ripping the injector out of her hands.

Nelson, coldly: Once Ben and I are done here, I expect you to be in my office, Lacy. Am I understood?

Lacy lowered her head.

Lacy: Yes, sir.

She left without another word. Nelson and I went to Ava, checking her vitals, and making sure my daughter was alright.
