Accepting the lead role as the prince in his class play was the biggest mistake Joonghyuk made in his five years of life. He had to talk so much more than he was used to, the costume he was forced to wear was his least favorite color (white) and the girl playing the princess was super bossy. There were a whole bunch more reasons, even more than he could count. That was saying a lot because he could count to twenty.
He could really only think of three good things about being the prince. The first was that he got to carry a sword, and swords were really cool. Even if it was made out of styrofoam, he could still use it to threaten his enemies. If only he could take it with him during recess, then the sandbox would be all his.
The second was that the play was called "rat puns hell" which was supposed to be the princesses' name or something. This was very important because he had to yell those words up at the princess, Sooyoung, who he hated. She was one of the main reasons why he hated being the prince so much, but made it his experience more satisfying as well.
There was nothing better than being able to say a bad word, H-E double hockey sticks, to someone he hated and even being praised for doing so.
Sooyoung was the absolute worst. She was bossy and rude and didn't even look like the princess. Her hair was short, which was the exact opposite of how rat puns hell was supposed to look. Because of that, she had to wear a yellow wig that he also hated as much as her, because it smelled funny.
The highlight of his acting career, however, was the boy that played as his trusty steed. Dokja.
He had never talked to the other before, and had never felt the need to. Being forced to talk to him was the best thing the play had done for him.
The other kids had always avoided Dokja for some reason and he had never bothered trying to find out why, figuring that it was cooties or something. Turns out that wasn't the case.
It turned out that the other kids thought Dokja was weird for not having parents. This wasn't something Joonghyuk understood.
Well, he understood the not having parents part, he didn't have parents either. What he didn't understand was why the other kids avoided Dokja and not him.
"It's because you're handsome," Dokja had pointed out. Joonghyuk usually ignored other people that called him handsome, but Dokja was different. After spending time with the boy, Joonghyuk had developed a teeny tiny crush on the other. He wouldn't tell him, of course, but the thought that his crush called him handsome made him feel nice.
So when Dokja called him handsome, he accepted the compliment wholeheartedly. He was handsome, and that was that. That was one of the reasons why he liked Dokja. He was smart, and his reasoning on why Joonghyuk was treated differently made sense. Of course, he still didn't think that Dokja deserved to be treated the way he was.
Him being handsome was also the reason why all the girls wanted him to play the role of the prince. "You're like a real prince, Joonghyuk," Dokja told him during a break one day. The two of them had managed to sneak away in a dark corner, "I'm gonna try my best so that you'll be my friend!"
Joonghyuk didn't understand what he was talking about. They were already friends. They had sneaked into the same dark corner every break since they first started rehearsing their play.
He probably should have cleared up the slight misunderstanding that had surfaced, but honestly, he was too distracted by the smile Dokja had on his face that seemed to light up the room.
