Lights...
People...
Smoke...
That's all Jake could see as he pulled onto his street, his yellow Camero screeching to a halt. He jumped out. "Sam! Samantha!" He was running up to his house when an officer stopped him.
"Sir, you need to wait on the other side of the tape."
"Like hell I am, that's my house. My girlfriend..."
"We cleared the house, sir, and we didn't find anyone."
Jake swallowed back his tears. "The panic room?"
"There's a panic room?"
"Yes, I saw someone on the camera and told her to get in there. It won't open unless you have the code. Please, I need to see if she made it inside."
"Ok, hang on." The officer jumped on his radio. "Sargent, I have one of the owners of the home outside. He has informed me of a panic room in the home."
"Let me come out."
The officer turned to Jake. "Sorry, I'm Officer Levinson. You are?"
"Jake Jenson." He shook the man's hand as he began to bounce like a coiled spring. Another man came out of the house. "Levinson!"
"Sir, this is Mr. Jensen, he owns the house with... Samantha?"
"Yes, my girlfriend, Samantha Matthews. We moved in a few weeks ago and I saw something in the cameras, and she called me, and I told her to go into the panic room, but the line went dead before she told me she made it in. Please, I just need to know..."
"Alright son, relax." He put his hands on Jake's shoulders. "Take a breath. I'm Sargent Barnes. Now, tell me where the room is."
"It's off the kitchen. Behind the pantry." Jake's eyes were now swimming. "Please, let me just check."
Barnes looked at Jake's broken face and sighed. "Follow me and don't touch anything." He guided Jake inside. The living room was a mess of smoking furniture and bullet holes. Their home was destroyed. The men walked through to the kitchen which looked fine, but it gave Jake chills. He made it to the pantry and saw the door ajar.
"Uh, the room is through there," he pointed.
"What's the code?"
"0-6-1-3-8-1"
Barnes punched in the code and the door hissed open.
Jake pulled it open to find Samantha in a ball in the corner. She had passed out in the room, but Jake could see she had been crying by the pink skin around her eyes. Jake let out a sob in relief. He dropped to his knees to take her in his arms. "Sammy?"
Sam stirred and blinked a few times. "JJ?"
"Oh Sam, thank god." Jake leaned his forehead onto hers. "Baby, are you OK?"
She nodded before wincing as she unfolded herself. "I made it to the room at the last second. Someone was pounding on the door, screaming for me to open it. I was so scared Jake." She began to cry in his arms, hyperventilating slightly and eventually passing out.
Jake stood up as best he could with Sam in his arms. Sargent Barnes and Officer Levinson helped him get her out the door. The Losers were all waiting to see what happened. Clay sighed as he saw Jake with Sam in his arms. "Is she ok?"
Jake couldn't speak. He kept his eyes on his girl as she slept in his arms. Sargent Barnes cleared his throat, "we need to get her checked out, but she looks ok. You are?"
