I walk a while to reach him and sit beside him. He looks up at me and smiles. His brown hair is falling over his eyes and shining because of the sun, I can’t help but smile back. Well, I’m supposed to smile, that’s the polite thing to do in return.

“Hey what’s up, Delilah?” he says

“Just want to talk to you, we used to talk a lot more. What happened?” I ask, because I realize it is true we have drifted a little. He’s so kind, helpful and down to earth, I love hearing what he has to say.

After thinking, he says he doesn’t know. We talk for a while after that about everything that has been going on, we laugh, and we zealously share our opinions and debate topics all with a smile on both of our faces, perpetually.

Then I finally decide to ask him what has been on my mind.

“If you were a girl, how would you get a boy to like you?” I am asking because I want to see if maybe he has some insight on how to get a boy like to Tyson to like me. He smiles, showing dimples and straight white teeth.

“Well…” he says “you should tell them”

“Would that approach work for Tyson?” His smile vanishes and is replaced by an expression I can’t really place, I continue “you know him better than I do, and I really like him. Maybe you could put in a good word for me, please?” I try to smile, so that his lips mimic mine and smile, as well. They don’t.

“Oh well, umm…” normally, he’s not at loss for words, he’s an eloquent speaker and is always spitting out quotes. “I’m not sure,” then he stands up and mumbles a ‘I have to go’ and starts to walk in the opposite direction of his house, towards more expanse of the golf course, then I yell for him to come back

“Wait! Don’t leave! This morning you said you were here for me and that I can trust you. Well, I wasn’t okay this morning, I’ve changed my mind and I want you to help me,” I say, grasping onto any method to get him to stay here longer.

“Why would I help you get some guy that doesn’t deserve you. Who doesn’t even notice your amazingness or beauty. You deserve someone who actually cares about you!”

“I’ll get him to care about me! That is why I need your help, I need for him to notice all those things you just said.”

“Don’t you think it’s wrong and not meant to be, if you have to force them to like you?”

“I’m not forcing him, I’m just trying to open his eyes to me,” I explain

“By not being yourself will never get a guy to like you. They’ll maybe end up liking the fake charade you display, but not the real you. You’re great and you don’t need to change for someone else.”

I just turn my head and look away from him, visibly upset. He just doesn’t understand, I thought he would.

Look, Delilah, you want to know what I would do to get a girl to like me, or at least notice me. I’d be there for them, I’d help them and I would try to make them realize how great they are by just being fully and honestly themselves”

I ask “So, is that what I should do?”

“not with him, no”

“Then who? What are you saying?” I’m so confused.

“Just stop being so ignorant,” he sighs, rolls his eyes and walks away.

He avoids me in school and we don’t speak for several weeks.
