CHRIS' POV
"No, fuck you! I don't need any IVs!" Scarlett exclaimed as the nurse pulled some out. I was sure she was going to lay that nurse out the moment he stuck it in, so I grabbed her hand tightly.

"Scar, look at me, you need it, they said you do-"

"No! I don't want a fucking needle in my arm!" I was sure this confused the nurse as he looked at her arms that were covered in tattoos. I reached over held down her other arm, knowing she'd squirm and cause more damage to herself than intended. The nurse stuck it in, and it pained me to watch her cry at the pain, but it was temporary and she stopped soon after. I let Hailey and Bryan know the moment she got checked in that we were at the hospital, which I'm sure Bryan had questions about. I'd just have to address them later. Not long after the IV was administered a tall man with brown hair slicked back in a white coat walked in. He looked familiar, but I couldn't quite place him...

"Really? Could this visit get any worse!" Scarlett exclaimed. I looked back over at the man, and then at his tag. That's how I knew him, that was the man I had told to get lost when he showed up to Scarlett's door.

"I'm not too thrilled to have you as my patient either, but here we are. We ran your bloodwork, some of it came back questionable so I looked into it a little further. Per usual, infertile so I didn't run a pregnancy test-"

"What does that have to do with anything?" I felt as though the infertility thing was something he was throwing out there just because. Just to push a button with her. But he pushed mine instead.

"Mr. Cerulli, please, I'm the doctor. I just had to let her know why I didn't run a pregnancy test. Now, what I did notice is you have the beginnings of sepsis from an untreated UTI it would seem? Why didn't you get it treated?"

"I didn't have time, and it wasn't bugging me." Typical for Scarlett.

"But you knew you had it?"

"Yeah, but it wasn't a nuisance until now. So what do I have to do? Just go home and take antibiotics?" Scarlett seemed completely calm, like she was used to the way he was talking to her. I, on the other hand, was growing more and more irritated with him. Jake shook his head, almost in disbelief at what she had said.

"No, now we have to keep you here until it's treated properly. So congratulations, you get to take up a much needed hospital bed because you didn't have time to stop and take care of a UTI," Noah seemed aggravated at the whole ordeal, but mainly at the fact that he was her assigned doctor, and I was the one with her.

"Thanks for always reminding me of what a waste of space I am because I can't populate the earth," Scarlett's words felt like fire even to me. Noah shook his head again and turned again to walk out.

"Too busy... yeah, too busy fucking your new boy toy," I heard him mumble as he walked out. Scarlett rolled her eyes and put her hand out, motioning for me to sit back down, as I was about to rip his head off in the hallway.

"I don't trust him to take care of you-"

"Relax, he's petty, but not enough to risk his license. If anything we just deal with a 36 year old man child with a medical degree." Scarlett was unfazed by his behavior, almost as if it was something she dealt with on a daily. If so, I felt sorry for her. That's a terrible way to treat anyone.

"So... infertile? Is that something you're ready to open up about or..."

"If I was ready I would have told you by now, so obviously, Christopher, I'm not ready." I bit my tongue and leaned back in my chair. "But, you are the only friend I have who now knows, so I guess I will," she said quietly. I leaned forward to give her my full attention, and grabbed her hand in mine. "We found out last year after a false positive. Of course, he was ecstatic and thinking of everything right off the bat. I on the other hand couldn't help but think that my life was over. I didn't want kids, and I knew I couldn't handle them. But I was going to have to suffer the consequences of a man who said 'oh, I'll pull out'. We came up to his office and did the scan and ran tests and we found out not only was it just a false positive, but I would also find out that I had a benign tumor on both ovaries. So, good news, I can't ever get pregnant." That last sentence didn't come out as excitement from her. There was a sense of longing. Like she wanted to eventually have that normal life. A white (or black) picket fence, a family to come home to, a kid to love unconditionally. "That's when things went down hill. You saw that little receptionist that looks to be about twenty? Yeah, he was sleeping with her and half the other girls here."

"Scar, I had no idea about any of that. I'm so sorry, and you went through all of this with no one by your side?"

"Yup. All of it. He grew distant, and I started throwing myself into my work." She seemed so happy, so full of life, you'd never be able to tell the struggle she went through to get to where she was. I gripped her hand in mine tightly, and kissed the top of it, then heard to door click open. Hailey and Bryan walked in, placing a bear and some flowers on a table by the door. I quickly released Scarlett's hand as to not raise any suspicion. She let out a heavy sigh and then offered a forced smile to Hailey and Bryan.

"Hey, Scar, how are you feeling?" Bryan asked pulling up a chair next to mine. I remained sitting close to Scarlett, and honestly I couldn't tell you why. I just wanted to be near her.

"I'm better now. I got to the hospital in time, I thought it was pneumonia or something."

"Yeah, Chris said you were near septic?"

"Just enough to diagnose it as such. UTI that went untreated."

"Damn, Scar. I didn't know you were fucking anyone, who's the lucky guy?" Bryan was clueless, so that's good. Hailey, on the other hand, looked like she knew something, or at the very least suspected something. The door clicked open again, and in walked Noah. For a split second I was relieved, then remembered I was pissed at him for everything he did to Scar.

"Okay, we're going to do IV antibiotics. Are you feeling any pain at all?" Noah was staring down at the clipboard in his hands, not even addressing the extra guests in the room. He didn't have to, Hailey was shooting daggers into his back with her eyes. Scarlett stayed silent, biting her tongue hard at all the things she wanted to say. Rehashing the memories made her angry, and it was evident. He put down the board and got a needle hooked up to the IV bag, then started to slide it in her other arm. Scarlett winced and he pulled it out, he missed the vein. He went back in and missed again. I held my hand out for Scarlett to squeeze as a comfort measure, and she took full advantage of it. After the third time of missing it I couldn't control it anymore.

"Dude, you're obviously doing it on purpose! Can't you get someone else to do it?" I stood up from my chair and Bryan put his hand on my shoulder.

"Chris, I am the doctor. Scarlett is dehydrated, so her veins are impossible to find."

"That fucking nurse didn't have a single problem finding it when he took blood and when he administer the other IV!" Bryan pulled me back, and Scarlett looked at me with wide eyes.

"Take Chris out of here, please-" Hailey walked up to Bryan.

"No! I'm fucking staying with her, I'm not leaving!" Bryan pulled me out as I protested, then pushed me against the wall.

"What the fuck is wrong with you!?" He whisper-yelled. I shimmied out of his grasp.

"Nothing, he was hurting her! You know it was on purpose! That's her ex!" I pointed back into the room.

"Chris, he's her doctor now. He's not going to break the oath he took over some petty breakup! What's gotten into you?"

"Nothing-"

"Bullshit. You think we haven't noticed anything?"

"We're just friends-"

"Friends don't look at each other the way y'all do. Shit, dude, I haven't seen a man look at someone the way you look at her since... well, since ever! What's going on with you?"
