starstruck:
"i'm so starstruck, baby cause you blow my heart up"
~
Marlee was having a horrible morning. In fact, it was so horrible that it could easily make its way into the "Guinness Book of World Records" to claim the title of the Worst Morning in the World.
It all started, no thanks to Dr. Hemmings.
She never would've imagined him being so kind and soft-spoken to her, but she was quickly proven wrong when he gently shook her awake from the dreadful nightmare she was trapped in. Don't get her wrong, Marlee couldn't have been more grateful that he saved her from the fear her mind seemed to revel in creating, but it took what felt like an eternity for her to finally drift back into a peaceful slumber. This is probably why she was beginning to regret being so snappy towards him and the other nurses who would walk in and continue to disrupt her sleep.
At promptly five in the morning, the nurse on rotation came in to check her vitals and draw a new round of blood. The poor girl felt like a pin cushion with how many tries it took to find a suitable vein. Marlee wished it was the one who had been with her for most of yesterday. There was something about the woman who gave the stressed girl a sense of comfort that a mother would their daughter.
Now, the time is shy of eight, so she knows Michael will be here any moment. He sent her several messages throughout the night that she answered briefly once she was finally awake. But, as much as she loves him, she cannot tolerate all the chaos while running on only a few hours of sleep. The brunette knew it would take so much more than that to be able to put up with Dr. Hemmings.
A quiet knock on the door pulled the girl from the last bit of sleep she was hanging onto just in time to notice her best friend slipping into her room. A weak smile pulled at Marlee's lips, and in return, Michael flashed his pearly whites in hopes of cheering her up the tiniest bit more. The blonde knew how hard this was on this best friend, who was lying in the uncomfortable hospital bed, trying to adjust herself to sit upright. He would travel to the ends of the earth to make her feel the most normal out of these circumstances.
"Hey, Mar, how are you feeling?" Michael spoke softly. As much as he wanted to leap into the bed right next to his best friend, he could tell by the look on her face that it was not a good idea.
Marlee could feel tears welling up in her eyes already. Out of relief, the tired girl had not spent a night without Michael being a room away in years. She was miserable without knowing he was close by. Michael caught her tears in the reflection of the early morning sunrise, rushing over to her side. Fuck it, he thought, briefly glancing to make sure her IV wasn't in the way before scooping her into his arms. They needed each other, the wordless exchange of 'I'm here for you' passing from Michael's arms to Marlee's heart. His arms rubbing up and down her back provided immense relief.
"Mike, I'm so tired. I just wanna go home." The poor girl whimpered into his chest as her tears became free-flowing.
His heart sank at her words, knowing in the furthest point of his mind that this was not the only night she would be spending here. Upon his arrival just a few minutes prior, Michael talked the nurses out front before stopping in her room. He wanted to be prepared for whatever was thrown their way that day, so he could be strong for her. He needed to do everything in his power to protect.
"I know, Mar, maybe you can. We just have to see what the doctors want to do." Michael sighed, trying to give her hope but knowing her chances were slim.
