Hongjoong didn't get home until dark.
Their train had been delayed and they had both stalled for far too long to even dream of getting back to Seoul before nightfall.
By the time they had arrived back at the train station, the sky was in torment and the clouds were bleeding orange, swirling with darkness as though they couldn't decide whether to turn or stay the same.
They caught a taxi because they were too tired to walk and rode in silence.
Wooyoung's apartment building came first, mostly because it was closer to the center of the city, for the people who could afford the kind of things that Hongjoong had long ago stopped himself from wishing for.
He didn't mention this to Wooyoung, though.
"Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?" He peeked his head back through the door to ask, mouth turned down into a dragging frown that Hongjoong couldn't help but smile at.
"What if she reacts badly?"
"I'll be fine, Wooyoung."
"But how do I know that?"
Hongjoong sighed, sparing an apologetic glance at the driver who was tapping the wheel with ticking patience.
They weren't supposed to be having this conversation now, not again, but Wooyoung was persistent and more caring than Hongjoong could fathom.
Wooyoung knew Hongjoong was nervous about telling his mother where he went, who he saw and what it meant.
Everything that it changed.
He knew even when Hongjoong was nothing but stone, expression neutral and indifferent to everything that came his way.
Wooyoung had always been good at that when it came to Hongjoong.
He gave Wooyoung a conceding look.
"I'll come over after. Tell you what happened."
"Okay!" The boy exclaimed, overjoyed and unapologetic about the way his features brightened drastically.
He kissed Hongjoong hastily on the cheek and bolted away from the car, already heading towards the entrance of his building.
"I'll stay up waiting for you!" He called out, and Hongjoong leaned over with a vigorous eye roll to close the car door.
"An odd one, that boy." The driver commented thoughtfully, nodding towards Wooyoung who was skipping into the building, light and unbothered by the eyes that found him as he made his way to the main elevator.
Hongjoong watched Wooyoung through the glass doors, smiling softly.
"Yeah, I suppose he is."
