Seeing that girl left me speechless and out of breath. I don't know why she has this affect on me when I don't even know her name. I've never even seen her before.
Stop acting like a damned fool.
I feel myself scowling, and it makes me angrier. Sometimes I feel as if I've gone mad. Why would a girl I don't even know make my body react in such a way? I don't know if she's a Solar, which she probably is, which makes her dangerous. No Lunar girl possesses such beauty from what I've witnessed in my past.
"Nate, are you okay dear?"
Rosita's voice brings me back to reality and I automatically feel ashamed for blocking her out. She has concern written all over her face. I clear my throat and look towards the ground before answering her.
"I'm sorry Rosita, I'm just tired. I think I should head home now, but thank you for the food. It was amazing as always." I say, giving her a smile to make it more sincere.
I see her frowning without a single attempt to hide it, and I know she's hurt. The thought makes me sick to my stomach, and I instantly feel uncomfortable. I know Mike and Rosita are good people, but they've always been jealous of my ability to choose who I can be and where I stand. They try to hide it, but I know better. And ever since Mike failed school, the tension got worse.
"Well boy, I hope you have a good day. Give a hug to Lucinda for me if you happen to see her soon."
While walking out of the restaurant, I decided I should pay a visit to Lucinda. It's been a week since I last saw her, and she is after all, my mother. Even though we're not related I've always called her mom and given her the respect that comes with the title. Without her, I know I wouldn't be here today. I'd be dead, or fucked up in some homeless Lunar shelter.
The whole time I'm walking to Lucinda's house, I glance around the city. Most of the buildings are greatly damaged, if not on the verge of tipping over. Many of the plants are still dead, and some places don't have electricity. But at least in this part of the city which I live in, the people try to decorate it and make it "more lively" with colors. I don't see the point in trying to hide what is so obviously there, but I guess everyone has a different opinion towards it.
There are many posters nailed onto walls with big, bold letters saying "UNITED WITH PEACE AND LOVE, NO MATTER LUNAR NOR SOLAR, WE ALL ILLUMINATE!". The posters tend to get obnoxious for me, and in my opinion it just adds more tension to the city. There's a low possibility of things ever changing. I mean, the same bullshit has been going on for years, the damage is done, isn't it? How could things ever be peaceful between Lunars and Solars? We're all just one big, fucked up society.
I let out a sigh at the thought. It's a shame that things have to be this way. From what I've seen in some history textbooks from school, this city used to be beautiful. It was full of colorful, tall buildings mixed in with green nature all around and blooming flowers. Even during winter the city was covered in a soft blanket of enchanting, white snow. When I think about how things have changed, it depresses me. But who knows, maybe all those books are fake. With Carlene controlling all books and education, there's no doubt in my mind he would stick lies into children's minds.
I remember school seeming so fake when I was growing up. Childhood memories were a piece of shit. If you stated your opinion, the teacher would whack your hand with a ruler. Well, like always, there was different treatment for Lunar children and Solar children. You weren't allowed to be hit if you were a Solar, but you would still be sent to the corner in order to "reevaluate your rude words". I snort at the thought. Only the government could create such a sick, twisted world.
