Chapter 8

Life was good for Jonny and Lani, but long distance was hard especially right around March when the push for playoffs is starting. Lani was happy in Boston she had her work friends, but none of them knew who her boyfriend was. She wasn't going to tell them anyway. Jonny was happy with his team knowing about Lani. Kaner and Sharpy were really the only one's who knew that Lani was an ex-stripper though.

Jonny's phone rang when it was still dark out, "Hello?"

His agent sounded panicked, "Is there anyway that you've dated or dating a stripper?" He asked calmly.

"Uh,"

"Answer the question Jonathan,"

"What are my choices?"

"Deny, acknowledge, ignore. Go check your email, they have a picture table," The pictures ranged from the first night Jonny met Lani, her at team events, them walking together, one from some charity event all the way back to Thanksgiving, and then a couple from the airport when she left from Boston.

"I-I need to make a call, can you wait like five minutes?"

"Five," He disconnected.

Jonny quickly dialed Lani's number, "What the fuck Jonny?"

"Lani, there's a story about to be broken about me dating a 'stripper' and I don't know what to do,"

"What are our choices?"

"Deny, acknowledge, ignore."

"Dude just ignore it, people say stupid shit all the time,"

"They have pictures,"

"What kind?" Lani was starting to sound worried.

"From the club, Thanksgiving, team shit, to the airport when you left,"

"Shit,"

"Yeah,"

"Does this person know I'm not a stripper anymore?"

"I don't fucking know. All I know is that is detrimental to my career, " Jonny snapped.

"You think this is about you?" Lani snapped back.

"It is my fucking career on the line,"

"Ever think about mine?! Jonny? Huh? This is gonna fuck up everything for me too. All you do is think about yourself!" Lani yelled.

"You don't get it! This is my whole career on the chopping block! YOU THINK THEY WON'T CONNECT ME PLAYING LIKE SHIT TO WHEN YOU LEFT?!" Jonny screamed.

"THAT'S YOUR FAULT. HOW THE FUCK WAS I SUPPOSED TO STOP YOU FROM DRINKING YOURSELF INTO OBLIVION EVERY NIGHT!?"

"I CAN'T DEAL WITH THIS RIGHT NOW," With that Jonny hung up.

"FUCK YOU!" Lani screamed into the hung up phone.

The next day front page news in the Chicago Tribune, "HAWKS CAPTAIN CAUGHT DATING A STRIPPER. The pictures say everything about a very intimate relationship with a stripper..."

Lani called Jonny immediately but got his voicemail, "You actually did it," She laughs sadly, " Wow. Call me back whenever you want to include me in life changing decisions it would be great."

Lani waited a week. Then two weeks. She got one text from Pat, ~You just got named. be ready for a shit storm~

She never replied to Pat, that's when Jonny called her back, "Lani let me say this once. You need to come to Chicago or they're going to you."

"Why?"

"They know who you are, you need to issue a statement,"

"HMM, I think the next headline will say, 'Ex-stripper drops hawks captain after he confirms rumors,' That sounds great I think I'll do that," She was about to hang up, when she heard his voice hitch,

"Please don't do that," His voice small and shaky.

"Why shouldn't I Jonny? Give me one reason why I shouldn't,"

"Because I love you," Lani sighed as Jonny went on," I'm not saying this while I'm drunk or angry. I'm saying this because I want you to know. Because I know that when you have your mind set to something you won't let it go. That's why I fell in love with you, that's why I'm always going to be in love with you.

If you do this, that is completely your choice. I fucked up by not telling you. They had too much evidence, they would've just gone after you instead. I didn't want you to get hurt Lani. I love you for whatever that means to you, I'll love you forever." Jonny didn't wait to hear her reply, he just hung up.
