"Isn't it just so pretty to think? All along there was some invisible string tying you to me" -Dr. Taylor Alison SwiftPip was a mere 11 years old when she first saw Ravi Singh. He was only thirteen but he was gorgeous. Of course she had seen him around the middle school and in town, but she'd never seen him this close up. All of them were at the Ward's house. Sal was letting her try to figure his calculus homework. She was very much failing. That was when his little brother walked through to pick up Sal. She didn't quite catch exactly what had happened but Ravi had erupted with laughter. It was like the sun shone through him. She was absolutely completely hypnotized.
3 years later
Senior year for Ravi was hell. Every single year for Ravi was hell. Most of the time he wasn't even inside of his head. When he was, everyone was whispering. Nobody could let him breathe. Nobody could go a week without leaving a cruel note in his locker. School was absolutely devouring him. He was disappointing everyone he knew. Which wasn't even a lot. His only chance at approval was hiding behind jokes and taking care of everyone he could. That and hiding the copious amounts of alcohol he used to numb himself.
On one of the days he went to school drunk, a ballsy move on his part, he didn't want to keep his head down anymore. He was tired. So endlessly tired. Tired of the whispers, the graffiti, the avoidance, the threats, all of it. So when James Lowe, a boy in his year, spat "scumbag murderer" at him he didn't back away.
Before he knew it, his nose was bleeding and both of them were on the floor. He was about to say something to him when a girl appeared behind him. She tried to offer her hand, but he didn't accept it. If he did he knew she would be crucified. She seemed oddly put together with four books in one arm and a pencil behind her ear. She didn't look at him with fear or hatred. She looked at him with something worse. Sympathy.
A red head girl pulled her away from his eye contact. It was probably for the best. He headed away before James could actually grasp the situation.
"Pippa you can't be talking to him. Next thing you know you're gonna end up as another Andie Bell. You're far to sweet for a boy like him. What a wreck," the girl Pip knew as Lauren whispered.
She bit her tongue to stop herself from saying something that would ruin her social life. Most of her didn't care about that stuff, but she couldn't deal with causing drama in the friend group again. Pip didn't see why everyone hated the Singhs. Just because Sal was suspected of something didn't mean that they were all an invasive evil. Something in her urged her to go after Ravi, to apologize for something neither of them had any control over. She stayed put.
Two years later
Throughout the entire weekend she spent in the hospital Ravi stayed by her side. She demolished him at scrabble for the first of many times. He brought her tons of food that she was forced to eat, yet Ravi always ended up eating at least half. He even read her every new article and update they got.
That time was over now. Now she was free into the world. One thing stayed the same though. Ravi and her were inseparable. Especially tonight. Their families decided that it'd be a great idea to go to the winter carnival as a "congrats you didn't get murdered by Becca!" celebration. Connor and Jamie also insisted on tagging along. It was weird, how Ravi had already started to get intertwined into her life. She should've expected it seeing as they solved two murders together. It was sweet.
Ravi and Connor meeting was not sweet. There was an unspoken conversation between them that she couldn't quite crack the code to. Nevertheless, they ended up getting along. She was beginning to realize they had a quite similar personality. Ravi's was more mature though.
The only bad part of the night was the fireworks. All of the laughing, eating, and rides were gone. It felt like the wind had been knocked out of her. It felt unnatural.
As it happened, she felt a hand intertwine with hers.
