Jungkook's eyes fluttered open, and he swiftly took a seat on the edge of the bed. The thumping of his heart filled his ears, wild and unruly. He exhaled deeply, trying to steady himself, and then pressed his palm against his forehead, wiping away the sweat that had nearly soaked his shirt.
"I... I had that dream again. Dammit," he muttered, briefly closing his eyes before reopening them.
"Damn, I thought I had finally moved on from what happened three years ago, b-but it seems I haven't," he whispered to himself, his voice tinged with a painful tone.
The memory of his twin's tragic fate haunted him relentlessly. He blamed himself for failing to save him, for not catching him as he fell, for not grasping his hand as he slipped away into the depths. The weight of responsibility crushed him.
His gaze fell upon the water pitcher resting on the bedside table, a bitter reminder of the incident he despised the most. Frustration clenched his fists, and he struck the wall with a force that drew blood. Leaning against it, he shut his eyes, tears of anguish streaming down his face.
I am sorry.
I am so sorry.
FLASHBACK...
"No, Jeongguk!!" Jungkook's eyes widened as he stared at the river. Jeongguk had fallen, abruptly and unexpectedly.
"Sir, please refrain from taking any action! We must remain here and wait for the rescue team. I assure you they will do everything they can to save your brother," the police officer pleaded upon witnessing Jungkook's intent to dive into the river as well.
"I cannot simply stand by and do nothing, knowing that he'll die there if nobody helps him!" Jungkook shouted, defying all reason, and leaped into the river without a second thought.
Jeongguk... Please hold on. You can swim, b-but given your condition...
Submerged in the dark waters, Jungkook vigorously swam, straining his eyes to catch a glimpse of his twin. The absence of light made it difficult to see, hiding everything in mystery or confusion.
