Before anyone gets the wrong idea, let me just say that my family was never terrible nor were they abusive towards me. Nor were there any drug or drinking related problems. We were a decent and caring normal Irish family. My parents, my oldest brother, my second oldest brother, and me. We each helped the other reach their dreams if we could and supported them in anything they did.
The problem was never them, but me. For some reason, I felt like I never belonged. I felt like I was meant for something other than living a normal Irish life. So one day while everyone was out, I pinned a map to the wall in my room, picked up one of my older brothers' dart from his room, closed my eyes, and threw it. I opened my eyes and went to look where it landed. Australia. I packed up all I could, took a photo of my family together so I wouldn't forget where I came from, collected all the money I had from odd jobs I had done, and left. I have never looked back since.
Now don't get me wrong I care about my family; truly I do. I left a note taped to somewhere that they could easily see it.
"Dear family,
By the time you would have finished reading this letter, I probably would be halfway across the ocean. I love you all very much and only wish the best for everything that you may later do in your lives. You are probably wondering why by now? Mom, I know your probably crying right now while dad and my brothers try to comfort you as best they can. I love you with all my heart to the moon and back, so don't forget that. The reason why I left is because of nothing you all have done so please don't think that; it's because I felt like I was destined for something far greater than a continuous life in Mullingar Ireland. So please whatever happens from here on, continue reaching for the stars that leads to your dreams. You never know, maybe one day we'll meet again.
