You rub your temples as you enter the small trailer where you had taken residence in the back streets of some random alleyway. It was cozy, but also freezing at night with no working electricity or heating, you hated the god damn cold. It does it's job though, shelter. You sit down for a moment in a small chair and collapse on the circular table in front of you. The games were draining, and as much as you hated to admit it, without that white-haired guys help today, you probably wouldn't have made it. They were getting harder too, it was only a matter of time before you slipped up. Your mind wanders to back to the man's beautiful face, he didn't look too much older than you. Then unintentionally, you picture his slender but toned body when he removed his jacket, his abs and the lines below dancing in your head. Wait a second, why the hell why are you thinking about abs when you almost died today? You scoff to yourself, maybe you just needed some food.
You rummage through the drawers of the trailer and find the last tin of baked beans. Shit, you'll need to scavenge for more tomorrow. You whip open the can and scoff down the cold and disgusting meal, almost choking as you do so. You were starving. Groaning you throw the can away and slink into the bed tucked away in the corner, wrapping yourself in layers to help battle the freezing night. Shivering, you fall into a deep sleep trying like hell not to dream about him.
Morning comes quickly, the ache in your stomach forcing you out of bed. You do a few stretches before you go to grab a new jacket out of the closet. Staying nimble and loose was one of your tips for survival, especially those pesky club games. You had to be prepared to run and dodge in this life, only a fool would face everything head on. You hold up the pale blue jacket similar to the one you wore last night in front of you. Sighing you frown at the new top, that other one really was your favourite jacket, not like it was a fashion parade anyway. Whipping it on, you find it actually fits nicely, accentuating all the right places and warming your body from the morning frost. Before unlocking the trailer, you peek out the window to ensure the coast is clear. The back streets of Shibuya were empty, where your small trailer sat perched in the morning sun. There was usually a few others in this area, although you had never had a problem with them. They had also slowly began disappearing, you knew what that meant. You rip open the rusty door and grab the backpack resting beside it, throwing it over your shoulder as you step outside. Securing the bag tightly around your back, you begin to jog through the barren streets. The big supermarkets had already been raided, but there was a few smaller ones further out that usually had some food left in them. Increasing your jog to a run once your legs stretched out a bit more, you soar past buildings that were once brimming with life, now are just the dull remains of a lost world. There was a beauty to it though, the empty streets and silence. Sometimes the quiet forces you to think beyond the noise, it changes people. You begin searching small stores for the next 20 minutes, there was nothing, every inch had been wiped clean. What the hell? Someone had clearly come and grabbed everything they could find, leaving nothing for anyone else. Growling you swear under your breath, "Selfish pricks." You run deeper into the city, heart pounding as you realise there really was no more food to find and you had a fast dwindling water supply. The big groups had probably organised this, forcing the lone players to join them. Seething, you hear a crunch behind you and kick backwards to whoever dared near.
"Ow what the hell? You kicked me!" A light voice wailed.
Your eyes narrow on the tall woman who stood before you, "Well why the hell did you sneak up on me then?" You spat. "You were asking for it."
Her eyebrow raises as she looks you up and down then she smirked, "Well you looked like you were about to have a panic attack in the middle of the street, I was just gonna ask if you were alright."
You wince, guess she was only trying to help. "I'm sorry." You sigh, "My stomach is about to eat me and all the food has been cleared out in this area."
She smiles and hooks your arm through hers, "Well my name is Kuina, you can totally join our group with those reflexes and we have heaps of food." You tighten your body at the touch and begin to shift uncomfortably as we start walking. You soon relax, it was nice to hold someone's arm. "So what do you say? Can I take you with me?"
You halt and smile up at her, "Listen, I appreciate the offer, but I've only survived this long by being on my own. You can't trust anyone these days, no exceptions."
Kuina gives you a soft and knowing smile, "I know it may seem that way sometimes, but I promise that being in a group and having a few people by your side will take you miles further than alone. How about you take a chance and join me for a few days, you can change your mind anytime and return to your 'lone wolf' lifestyle after."
You cock your head to side, carefully considering the offer. You think back to the tiny, cold trailer you would have to head back to. No food, and not even enough water to wash yourself. You let out a huff of acceptance, "I guess I don't really have a choice anyway, it wouldn't hurt to try. A few more hours and I'll have wasted away." As if on cue, your stomach lets out an enormous growl.
Kuina laughs and we begin walking once more, "Great! I promise you won't regret it. I can even be your first friend! So tell me how was your last game?"
You shrug, "It was alright, I had this super cocky guy mess with me the whole time though, annoyingly he is the reason I survived. Tell me, why do hot guys have to be such jerks?"
Pulling a face Kuina agrees, "Typical, he sounds infuriating. Hopefully you don't run into him again."
You nod in agreement and continue to follow Kuina towards her base camp, making casual chat along the way. She really was lovely, and by the looks of her, she strikes you as a spade player. You weren't really sure what type of player you were. You were strong and fast like a spade player, usually passed the diamond games without too much difficulty and the heart games were another one of your strong suits. But with the club games, you found it hard to trust others. You had only ever played one club game before, and had only survived because of the teamwork of a few other players, in fact you had almost been the reason we lost.
Kuina leans into you breaking up your thoughts and whispers, "We are here."
You look up at the giant resort like building in front of you, gleaming with lights and life. Music was thundering and the sound of laughter and cheering filled the air.
This was not just any group, this was the fucking beach.
