steve swung open the huge doors, his gaze fixated on valarie, checking to see if she was okay. valarie couldn't help but feel a tinge of anxiety as his eyes lingered on her. she tried to shake off the feeling, but it persisted, leaving her feeling self-conscious and exposed.
"can we come in?" nancy asked, her tone hinting at a hint of jealousy.
"oh, uh, yes, come in," steve snapped out of his trance and motioned for the girls to enter, taking a seat beside the pool.
steve couldn't shake the guilty and confusing feeling of developing feelings for another girl, despite having a girlfriend. he wondered how he had let this happen and struggled to make sense of his emotions. but he pushed those thoughts aside, telling himself he couldn't have feelings for valarie.
as they walked in, valarie overheard tommy talking about her. a wave of insecurity washed over her as she wondered what he was saying and if they were criticizing her. she began to second-guess herself, questioning if she had been too awkward or said something wrong. the more she dwelled on it, the more insecure she felt.
"oh, didn't think fatherless was going to show up," tommy barked at valarie, his words cutting deep. in that moment, valarie felt like she was on the verge of breaking down.
"fucking shut up, tommy. you have no right to say anything about her," carol fired back at tommy, matching his tone with equal force. it was as if carol finally understood valarie's struggles.
overwhelmed with gratitude, valarie felt a sense of relief and appreciation when someone stepped in to defend her. as she heard carol speaking up on her behalf, a wave of relief washed over her.
"thank you," valarie mouthed to carol, who turned back to her boyfriend and kissed him. valarie could have sworn she saw the smallest smile on carol's face, a silent acknowledgment that she had valarie's back.
valarie took a seat on one of the deck chairs, while steve offered valarie a drink and a cigarette which she was happy to take.
she was lost in her own thoughts and couldn't hear anyone, it was just her. she felt like she was faking her happiness, she tried to put on a brave face and act as though everything was okay, but deep down, she knew that she was struggling. she felt like she was carrying a heavy weight on her shoulders, and that no one else could understand what she was going through.
valarie kept on thinking to herself before she heard steve call out her name, steve shifted close to her and asked her if she's okay
"yeah i'm fine" replied valarie and focused on the warmth that the cigarette was providing, she didn't care about the party she just wanted to go home.
