Ship: Jalph

The twenty four military school boys had been on this wretched island for a couple weeks at the most. Ralph in particular was growing sick and tired of it already. He missed his home, his family, his bed, his friends back at the academy, everything.

There had been a storm the previous night, one that knocked over the vast majority of the shelters they worked so hard to build. Jack was so angry at Mother Nature for carelessly destroying all their hard work that he decided against rebuilding his own shelter until he could be sure that the storm clouds were really past.

The night after the storm, Jack sat up against a rock between the beach and the forest, watching the waves crash gently against the shore under the starry night sky. He was cold, and hadn't realized until tonight just how good a job the shelters did at blocking the wind out. Jack stared at the several shelters the other boys had rebuilt after the storm. Ralph and Jack were the only two who had their own shelters. The rest of the boys slept two big ones to a single shelter, and two or three little ones to a shelter. Jack stared aimlessly into the night, angry at the storm for wrecking the shelter he had worked so hard on. Even though he was angry and cold, he had to admit that the ocean looked beautiful under the night sky. He could never see so many stars shining so brightly in the cities he lived in back home and then at the academy.

Jack startled and flinched when he heard the unexpected sound of movement from one of the other shelters. He held his breath and watched silently as Ralph crawled out of his shelter. The younger boy walked in the opposite direction of where Jack was sitting, and didn't even notice him before he was out of sight. Jack was curious about what he might be up to, but Ralph returned only a couple minutes later. He must've just gone around the corner to go to the bathroom, the older concluded.

"Hey" Ralph whispered as he approached Jack, noticing him sitting up for the first time that night.

"Hi" Jack said flatly.

"Why are you still awake?"

"It's freezing out here, if you haven't noticed" Jack pointed out in a frustrated tone.

"That's why the rest of us rebuilt our shelters today, or yesterday I guess" Ralph thought aloud.

"And then you'll be building them again when the next storm hits" Jack pointed out.

"Still, I'm not cold now" Ralph countered.

"Good for you" Jack flatly replied.

"You can come sleep in mine tonight, if you want. I can help you rebuild yours tomorrow" Ralph suggested to the other.

Jack just glanced up at him instead of answering. He stared at the willing boy for a moment before he sighed heavily and was forced to admit that Ralph's offer was better than the alternative.

"Yeah, okay" Jack sighed, "thanks."

"Don't mention it" Ralph stuck his hand out to the other to help him up. But Jack was feeling helpless enough as it was, so he ignored Ralph's hand and stood up on his own. Big ego, Ralph thought to himself as he lead the way back to his shelter.

The shelter was cozy and not very large, making it impossible for either boy to really take his own space. Given that it was a rather wind night, and the shelters had little holes between branches and leaves that let a little breeze in, neither complained about the extra warmth their body heat provided.
