We enter the cafeteria and I feel as my mates tense up. My eyes are searching the room as I try to look for anything out of the ordinary. The problem is, I have only eaten in this place once. I can't say that I regret having eyes for only my mate that day. It would have come in handy now though.
We head over to the buffet area and I immediately spot Adam as he brings out fresh trays from the back. When I smirk at the traitorous bastard a bead of sweat drips down on his head. I smile knowing that he knows what is at stake here if he messes up. Jefferson and I guide Julia with our hands on her lower back as we make our trays. She is helpful in this way as she piles food on to both of our trays as well.
I choose a seat closest to the exit so that I can watch all who come in and all who exit the area. Having only one way in and one way out is actually working in our favor for this occasion. Julia and Jefferson hardly pick at their food and I do the same. This isn't going to work however if we look as if something is up. Right now anyone in this room can pick up on the tension that we share.
"Okay, princess. Tell me, why was Cinderella so bad at soccer" I ask Julia. Her head snaps up from her plate as she looks at me in confusion.
"What?" she asks.
"Why was Cinderella so bad at soccer?" She cocks her head to the side as she looks at me as if i have lost all my marbles and I chuckle. "It's a joke, love. Just go with it."
"Okay, I don't know. Why?"
"Because she kept running away from the ball" I answered her with a smile.
As she thinks about the joke, she laughs. "That is just terrible". However, the joke had the added effect that I wanted it to. She seems a bit more at ease as she begins picking at her foot again. I decide to continue this charade as I look around the room. Making my laugh could actually make this a bit more fun.
"Okay brother, this one's for you. Why can't you hear a pterodactyl going to the bathroom?" I ask him and he smirks.
"Hmm, because it's a bird that flies" he says dead panned. This time it's my turn to laugh before I even deliver the punchline. His answer has me immediately shaking my head. I do notice that Xander and his mate have arrived however.
"No brother. It's because the p is silent "I tell him as I look him dead in the eye. Julia laughs as he rolls his eyes at me. He would have to admit that that one was clever. I can also see the smile that he is trying to hide.
"Why do you know so many terrible jokes?" Julia asked me. I kick back in my chair as I eat some of the meat on my plate. Getting comfortable she leans into Jefferson with a yawn.
"There was never much to do in the facility. There wasn't much reading material either. Slater thought that reading was a useful skill so he taught us to read from the newspaper. He would choose these terrible articles that never mentioned anything good to prove to us that the world was bad. It was just another reason to stop us from wanting to leave. But one day he started leaving the newspapers. As a kid I was attracted to the little comics it helped. It actually made me look forward to the reading lessons, "I answered her.
I watch as her eyes get sad for a moment. I didn't tell her so that she would feel sad for me. The answers just sometimes come out when she asks me something. She and my brother are the only people that I don't want to hide things from. Maximus and Emily enter the cafeteria. Now that everyone is here the environment is tense once again. We all know what's coming. I should suspect that he has already talked to those who would also be making a scene.
"Okay, you both can answer this one. What creature has more lives than a cat?" I say with a smirk as I watch the others. In a moment or so I will be signaling Julia to start her act. She yawns again as Jefferson snorts beside her.
