"Okay," Mason rubs my shoulder comfortingly, squeezing it, "What's the game plan, boss?"
He and I are on the sidelines of the red carpet, waiting for Jack and Lilly to arrive. For someone who just got the invite to this thing an hour ago, Mason looks great, dressed in a pressed suit, blazer open to show his white button-up shirt, where he's left the top few buttons left open. "To ditch and get In and Out?" I say optimistically.
Mason laughs, shaking his head at me, "tempting," he says, "but no, you've got this. Just... be cool, okay?"
"Cool?" A voice says from behind us, one that immediately makes me smile, "Have you met Eden?"
"Jacky," I turn on the balls of my feet, rushing to greet the boy. It's been a few months since I last saw him at the premiere of one of his films. He's always busy nowadays, filming new films and casually being one of the most beloved boys in Hollywood at the moment.
Jack spins me around like he does every time he greets me, "you're not allowed to go on tour again," Jack says, obviously kidding. If I remember correctly, he was at 6 shows last summer, in the front row of each one, screaming louder than the other fans, "I missed you too much."
"Or," I sing teasingly, "you can be my opening act, then we'll never have to be apart."
Placing me back on the ground, Jack smiles at me, soothing my nerves slightly, "Eden Bliss, you are a genius."
"Okay, stop hogging her," Lilly slaps his arm. She's wearing a gorgeous blue dress, one that makes her eyes pop against her blonde hair, "I wanna hug Eden too."
You know in the movies, when the female characters reunite and let out the girlish squeals that concern everyone around them? That is Lilly and I right now, squealing as we attack one another into a hug, my sister and Bailey joining in as Mason and Jack watch from the sidelines.
"Eden, look at you," Lilly holds her arms out so she can look at me clearly, "you look hot."
My dress is black, with a halter neck and squared cutout, showing off my chest. The skirt is mini, showing off my legs and the black heels I'd paired with it. I used to be really nervous about wearing outfits that made me stand out, preferring to dress simply and hide in the background. I've changed a lot since the last set of Avatar premieres, though; I've never been so confident before... it's kind of exhilarating.
"Is no one gonna tell me that I look hot?" Mason questions, breaking up our reunion.
I laugh as Jack claps Mason on the shoulder, "You look hot, dude."
"You're only saying that 'cause I asked you to," Mason teases, crossing his arms like a child. I laugh, walking back over to him. Even with my heels on, Mason towers over me, making me appear tinier than I actually am.
"Alright, Trinity, Lilly, Jack and Bailey," one of the coordinators wearing a headset walks over to us, "you four are good to go on now. Eden and Mason, I'll let you know when we're ready for you."
"Good luck," I reach over, squeezing my sister's hand, "we'll see you out there."
Mason and I watch as my sister and friends walk onto the carpet, the photographers' voices getting louder at the sight of them. My mind can't help but wander to the first red carpet they did for the way of water all those years. I remember thinking Trinity looked so grown up and Jamie hugging me when he finally made it off... he always hated red carpets.
I wonder if he still does?
"You nervous?" Mason asks, linking her hand through mine. When I look up at him, his brown eyes are staring back at mine, filled with concern. "What are you going to say to him?"
I hadn't thought of that because, truthfully, I don't think there is anything I could say that would make it any less awkward. "I guess just act normal," I shrug, nonchalant, "it's only a big deal if I make it one, right?"
Mason's phone chimes in his pocket, and he pulls it out, smiling slightly, "Amenah sent this," he shows me his phone. It's a selfie of her and Mason's dog, Iggy. She's smiling, holding up a thumbs up. Below the selfie is a text message reading out. Tell E she's a badass, and we love her!
I smile at the screen, my heart rising slightly in my chest, "let's send her one back." I say, happy for the distraction that's taking my mind off Jamie and the impending reunion we're going to have at any given moment. He's probably on the carpet already... meaning if we're lucky, Mason and I can get to our seats with no interaction.
That'd mean I'd have to go the entire film dreading our reunion, but at least I'd have time to think about what to say.
Mason holds his phone out as I hold up a peace sign, smiling brightly at his camera. He sticks his tongue out, his expression making me laugh as he takes the picture and quickly sends it to his girlfriend. I watch as he quickly sends it into the Scream group chat, too, bragging that he's with me right now.
From the sidelines of the carpet, Mason and I can see my sister and friends, all posing for photos and doing interviews. Bailey is talking to someone while Trinity is playing some game on the side of the carpet, laughing at whatever she is being asked. Jack and Lilly are posing for photos, and my heart melts as he looks down at her adoringly.
I wish I could go back in time and tell 17-year-old Jack he'd be here right now, arm wrapped around the girl he never thought he'd have a chance with, together for almost 2 years.
I'm so caught up in watching my friends, leaning over to look at the Scream cast group chat every once and a while, laughing with Mason at how dramatic they all are. I almost forget that I'm anxious, that at some point tonight, I'm gonna have to face the person I've spent all this time avoiding.
Then suddenly, it all comes back. My heart drops in my chest, my laughter dying down as my hand reaches for Mason's, needing him to keep my anxieties tethered down. My name once felt so familiar coming from him, like he was meant to say it, but right now, it sounds foreign and confused, making me regret even coming here. "Eden?"
Sorry not sorry for the cliffhanger...
Hope you all enjoyed❤️
Next chapter is another past scene, leading up the moment where everything fell apart... and then the chapter after will be their reunion!
