EARTH HAS BEEN SIMMERING IN radiation for almost one hundred years. There was a nuclear war, which spread radiation everywhere. Now, there's a colony in space known as The Ark, which has been thriving ever since. For some reason though, today seemed to be the downfall of it all.
"Prisoner 309, Blaire Jordan, stand facing against the wall." The guards say. The brunette girl listens, scared. Was this the moment she was getting floated? Is it already her eighteenth birthday? Blaire thought to herself. She was scared for her life, but they put a wristband on her wrist instead. Yes, it felt like hell but she didn't fight them.
"What's going on?!" she begged for an answer, but they never gave her one. She was brought into the hall where other delinquents were walking. Blaire thought her brother might be here too, so she ran around searching for him. They were both arrested below the age of eighteen. Jasper, her brother, was arrested for stealing herbs with Monty to get high. Blaire's reason for being confined was much more ridiculous.
"She's getting too big to fit in the closet.." Jasper says to their mother. Blaire wasn't meant to be born. There's a law that you can only have one child on The Ark to save supplies and oxygen.
"She's only six, she has to fit! If she doesn't—"
"You'll get floated, I know.." Jasper finished. Blaire tried her hardest to fit, but the inspector came to their unit too soon. There was a knock at the door. "One minute!" their mother yelled.
"No, we need you to open the door now or we will have no choice but to enter ourselves," the guard says.
"Just wait—" Jasper began to say, but they opened the door to see Blaire.
"You are under arrest for having an unaccounted child in your family unit," the guards said as they confined their mother. Just a moment after, Blaire was confined as well, just for being born.
Blaire was finally able to find her brother. "Jasper!" she pulled him into a hug.
"Blaire, you're so big now! You aren't that little six year old anymore," Jasper smiles, just seeing her face. He was relieved to know that she was okay. He hadn't seen her since she was confined. He would have visited her, but he got confined not too long after.
The delinquents began to enter the drop ship, but there was one girl being carried inside on a stretcher. Blaire looked at her, completely puzzled. Is she hurt? She didn't seem hurt. Her mother taught her plenty of things while being stuck at home, one thing being injures and other things medical.
As Blaire sat in her seat, she watched the guards which stood by the entry way. There was one guard in particular who looked different, more stressed. She kept an eye on the boy. There was a voice which spoke through the speakers, counting down the time until they launched. It was getting close to only a minute before they headed to the ground.
Jasper was sat beside Blaire, and their were a few seats open in front of them. Blaire was scared to go to Earth. She kept thinking about the radiation and how their landing could go wrong. That was another thing her mother taught her about, mechanics. "I'm scared, Jasper," Blaire says.
"I won't let anything bad happen to you, I promise," Jasper said to her. She knew he meant it.
It was now less than a minute to launch, and the chancellor was standing by the door, talking about how we are making a great impact on human survival. Blah blah blah. Blaire despised Chancellor Jaha.
15 seconds. And a gunshot echoed through the air as the door began to shut.
The boy who Blaire noticed before ran inside just before the doors closed, and quickly strapped himself into a seat just in front of her.
Blaire was too scared to talk, as they launched off The Ark, she closed her eyes tightly.
She was curious of the boy who shot the gun. Who'd he shoot? Why'd he do it?, but she stayed silent.
The ship shook as it entered the atmosphere, and the tv's turned on, playing a message from the chancellor. Apparently his son was on the ship, and people started yelling at him. "Who does your dad think he is?" Stuff along those lines. The boy's name was Wells Jaha.
The ship was shaking as it came closer to the ground, and at this point, Blaire was almost excited. She wondered what the air smelt like, what the ground felt like to walk on, what the trees and all the nature looked like, and most importantly, how her life would play out there.
Just as the ship hit the ground, everything went black.
