❦𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑂𝑛𝑒❦

Tomorrow is my 16th birthday, which I heard in human culture class is apparently a big deal and the kids do huge parties to celebrate. For us dragon folk though, we mainly just go on flights and do tricks in the sky to show off and have some harder to get foods. The dragon folk don't have many ways do get the foods that humans have, all we can get is whatever we can find in the woods surrounding us, so things like plants and animals. But on birthdays, we get a special treat from the flock, usually it's some sort of sugary drink made from sugarcane that they find an hour or so flight from our cave and berry juice. It's actually pretty good!

Anyways, as I was saying, tomorrow is my birthday so I got the day off from chores to go on a flight around the forests surrounding our mountain. I had decided to hangout at the springs most of the day, so now I'm going on a sunset flight, which is one of the best times to fly in my opinion. Since we are only half dragon, we don't look like the big, scaly, reptiles that humans think we would look like. We just look like humans with patches of scales across our bodies creating patterns, claws that extend from our nails, tails, horns, and we also have fairly large wings that connect to our shoulder blades. Our wings are covered in scales, just like a regular dragon's wings. So when flying, we just look liked humans with wings and a tail, which is probably weird to see if you're not one of us.

As I was flying around, lost in thought, I started to realize that the woods I was flying over weren't familiar looking. Knowing that my flock tries to stay hidden from humans, in fear of them hunting us down, I flew lower so I was gliding right above the trees, occasionally having to dodge an extra tall one. I was looking around, trying to find any familiar landmark, when suddenly I came to a stop. I saw something strange, there was a human town within my sight line.

I know that our flock rules clearly state to NEVER EVER, go near human settlements, or any humans in general, but I was really curious and wanted to see a human in real life and not just in a book. I landed silently on a high up branch of a tree, near the outskirts of the town and slowly made my way from tree to tree so that I could get a better view of the humans and their town.

Once I was close enough I scanned the 'streets' of the town. At least, I think that's what they are called, we have paths back at home, but I've never seen a street before, it was all black and looked like it was made of rock. Then suddenly I saw one. A real live human! I was so excited that I almost let out a loud roar of excitement.

I watched the humans carefully, but then was confused, these guys don't look like the humans I've read about in school? They're all weirdly pale and red around the eyes, and they all have green hair. I also noticed that all of them have identical bracelets on.

I wonder what that's all about? But then I noticed how dark it was getting, and suddenly I heard a loud noise coming from the town, someone was shouting something about a curfew? Then I heard the voice again telling to townsfolk to get into their houses since they were out after this 'curfew' thing. While this person was yelling (even though I couldn't see them), I heard them call these humans 'zombies'. That's when I realized that the creatures I had thought were humans were actually zombies, which would explain the green hair, redness, and pale skin.

I decided to leave so I could get back home before anyone came looking for me since I don't normally stay out this long alone.

After a while of flying around trying to retrace my path back home, I noticed familiar surroundings and knew where I was again. I put on a burst of speed to get back to the cave so I could go to sleep and hopefully not get in trouble for being away for so long.

Unfortunately, the stars were not on my side tonight, as the moment I landed in front of the cave my parents sprinted out and hugged me, wrapping me in their large wings. "Little flame where were you? We have been worried sick, you never stay out this long alone!" My mother fretted. "Don't worry Mum, I just lost track of time and accidentally flew a bit too far away from the mountain." I rambled.

Suddenly realizing what I had just said, I tried to make my way into the cave and get to my room, but my parents stopped me in my tracks. "What do you mean 'flew too far'?" my father asked, raising a brow at me.

I sighed, knowing I needed to tell them, especially since they were the heads of the flock. "I was lost in thought, and accidentally flew too far away from our territory and came across a human town." I admitted.

But before my parents could say anything I continued my explanation, "Don't worry Dad, nobody saw me because I hid in the trees before I even got into sight range. The weirdest thing happened though."

My parents looked at me with confusion written on their faces, urging me to go on. "When I was watching, I noticed that the humans don't look like the ones I've read about in school. These ones were all pale and a little red around their eyes, and they all had green hair and identical bracelets on.

I was really confused at first, but then a super loud voice started telling the town people to go back into their houses because they were out past 'curfew', and then they called them zombies which made me realize that the townsfolk I saw weren't human, they were zombies! There're monsters just like us!" I exclaimed.

My parents exchanged looks, but luckily I didn't get in trouble. Instead they just ushered me off the bed and went to inform the council about what I told them.

I changed into sleepwear flopped down onto my bed, which is made up of wool from sheep that we caught, and fur skins from various animals making it soft. I stretched my limbs and wings out, before I pulled my bear skin blanket over my body and fell asleep, almost instantly.
