Embarrassing

"Shit."
Sonic sank from his bed to the floor, embarrassment burning holes into his heart. He wasn't one for taking things slow or caring about what others thought, especially not from someone like Shadow. So then why was he so.. distraught over this one little interaction? Shadow was nothing more than his rival, if anything, he was Sonics friend! (Even if Shadow wouldn't admit it). Why was he acting so weird? Why couldn't everything go back to how it used to be? When they would taunt, and tease each other, Sonic wouldn't think twice about it. Why was he so focused on what Shadow thought of him, or why he couldn't stop thinking about the faces Shadow would make when Sonic said something exceptionally annoying? It bothered him. Not knowing what to do with these feelings, with the confusing thoughts, with the annoying sleepless nights staring at his delivered messages that Shadow would always read but never respond to. He hated when Shadow would do that. What's the point of giving out your number if you aren't going to talk to me? Sonic groaned and tiredly reached for his phone.

Sonic:
Hey, you there? Sorry about earlier Shadz didn't mean to like .. upset you or smth ik I made it awkward LOL.
You don't have to respond I'm just

With a long sigh, Sonic threw his phone over his pile of dirty laundry and closed his eyes.
How could everything go so wrong and so right? Maybe if he could just... go back.

Earlier:
Sonic:
Yo Shadz! Think we can race later? I'm dying to get my legs moving again LOL
Shadow ⭐️:
  Twinkle park. 20 minutes.

Sonic chuckled and stuffed his phone back in his quills, either it was no response, or a time and place. He could never understand how Shadow worked but then again, who did? With a few minutes left to waste, Sonic decided to take a shower. Even if he's going to get ruffed up anyways, it never hurt anyone to smell good for once! After all, he wouldn't want Shadow to think he didn't take care of himself or something. That would be so embarrassing.. especially if they ended up fighting- or just getting close to eachother...
What the hell?
"Since when did I think about stupid sappy stuff like that?" Sonic thought before entering the bathroom and turning the shower faucet. "I'm just overthinking things. Making things more complicated for myself is all. Classic sonic." Reaching into his quills, he pulled out his phone, typing a quick message of agreement to Shadow before placing his phone on the counter. The shower water was warm, it helped keep him calm. To be completely honest with himself, Sonic never liked water, at least not in large amounts. Fear of drowning and all. But for now, the shower wasn't so bad, and for a while, it helped calm his nerves.
That was until it didn't.
Sonic was now left to his thoughts. And his thoughts for some indescribable reason, were full of Shadow.
Memories of them fighting, of all the taunts that Shadow and he exchanged, the way Shadow looked after a particularly intense race, it all stuck with him.
He can still remember their last race. The trees that bent with the force of their speed, the way the wind felt on his face, and the fact that they truly had no destination. The whole race was so different than any other, they felt closer, and more connected in a weird rival way. That was until he got a call from Amy, barely heard over the noise of his speed. Coming to a screeching halt, Shadow and Sonic listened to what Amy had to say. Something about Eggman...? Work?? A date??? The dark hedgehog had already lost interest by the time Amy got to ranting about dinner planned for later that day.
"I am so sorry Shadz! But I really have to-"
"Don't worry about it hedgehog. We both know I would have won either way ."
"Now hold on!-"
"SONIC!"
He winced at Amy's enraged voice echoing through the woods
"Right... sorry Ames! Gotta go Shadow, maybe we can continue this some other time?"
"Just text me."
"Right on! See you later!"
Sonic waved and ran off to his pink friend.
