"the wound . . . it is poisoned."
as soon as those words left artemis' mouth, maddie's heart sank. the wound, the one which zoe had told them not to worry about, the wound that was supposedly 'fine', and 'just a scratch.'
zoe had fought her father with that wound. the sheer amount of bravery that the hunter held would never fail to surprise the girl.
the group of four made their way slowly over to artemis and zoe, ignoring the titan's army that was minutes away from attacking them. it seemed that each person (and goddess) had simply lost the will to fight.
maddie wasn't doing too good. the arms of thalia and percy wrapped around her figure were just about the only things keeping her standing.
artemis looked up as they reached her, and her eyes fell to maddie's wound, which was still oozing blood from the dagger. she stood up, making her way over to the girl and examining the injury.
"hmm . . . close, very close . . . had this knife touched an artery it would have been fateful . . ."
"can you . . . heal it?" maddie asked.
artemis studied the wound for several more moments before replying. "i can remove the knife and stood the blood momentarily . . . but i cannot heal it fully. that is my brother's area of expertise."
she cupped her hands over the knife handle, and whispered a few words in ancient greek. a silvery wisp surrounded the wound, and an almost blinding pain shot through maddie's arm. the girl squeezed her eyes shut and tried not to scream as she felt the dagger slowly slip out of her shoulder. it clattered as it landed on the ground.
she opened her eyes. the wound was now absent of her knife, and to her relief, the blood had ceased. what remained was a poorly-stitched scar on her shoulder.
"gross," percy said, pulling a face.
"the stars," zoe murmured from the ground. "i cannot see them."
everyone's attention immediately turned to her. artemis resumed her position on the ground next to the hunter.
percy began to panic. "nectar and ambrosia . . . come on! we have to get her some."
no one moved. grief hung in air. the army of kronos was just below the rise. even artemis was too shocked to stir. after everything with atlas and luke, it seemed that they had nothing in them left to keep fighting.
then, a strange buzzing noise was heard.
just as the army of monsters came over the hill, a sopwith camel swooped down out of the sky.
"get away from my daughter!" the unmistakable voice of dr. chase yelled. his machine guns burst to life, peppering the ground with bullet holes and startling the whole group of monsters into scattering.
