El and Max had been together for over a year now, and their relationship had been through its fair share of ups and downs. But lately, things had been different. They had grown distant from each other, and it seemed like they were both struggling to find their way back to the connection they once had.
It was a Saturday night, and El was sitting on her bed, staring at her phone. She had been trying to work up the nerve to call Max all evening, but every time she picked up the phone, she would put it back down again. She knew that something was wrong between them, but she didn't know how to fix it.
Finally, she took a deep breath and dialed Max's number. The phone rang for what seemed like an eternity before Max finally answered.
"Hey," El said softly.
"Hey," Max replied, her voice guarded.
There was an awkward silence between them for a moment, and then El spoke again. "Can we talk?"
"Sure," Max said, but her tone was still wary.
El took a deep breath. "I feel like we've been drifting apart lately," she said. "I miss you."
Max was quiet for a moment. "I miss you too," she finally said. "But things have been so weird between us lately."
"I know," El said. "But I don't want to lose you, Max. I love you."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line, and El's heart sank. She had never said those words to Max before, and she was afraid that they might push her away.
Finally, Max spoke. "I love you too, El," she said, her voice thick with emotion.
Tears sprang to El's eyes as she heard those words. It was like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. "I'm sorry for whatever I did to make you feel like we were drifting apart," she said.
"It's not just you," Max said. "I've been feeling weird about everything lately. Like we're both going through the motions, but we're not really connecting anymore."
El nodded. "I know what you mean. But we can fix this, Max. We can find our way back to each other."
Max was silent for a moment, and then she spoke again. "I want that," she said. "I want to be with you, El. I just don't know how to make things better."
El smiled through her tears. "We'll figure it out together," she said. "I know we can."
And they did. It wasn't easy, but they talked about everything that was bothering them and worked through their issues together. They went on dates, watched movies, and talked for hours on end. They laughed, they cried, and they loved each other through it all.
In the end, their relationship was stronger than ever before. They had found their way back to each other, and they knew that nothing could ever tear them apart again.
