(I wanted to publish this in two parts but that defeats the whole point of a one shot so here's one with a 5k word count instead.)

The day that the children of the royal family were anticipating for the whole year had finally arrived. Prince James and Princesses Sofia and Amber dressed up probably the fastest they'd ever dressed up in their lives, and within minutes of waking up they were at the entrance gates of their castle.

"Not so fast, children." Baileywick cut them off. "What about breakfast? And your parents have barely gotten out of their bed, too." He spoke. He sounded like he permanently had something stuck in his throat and had just given up on trying to get it out.
"We can skip breakfast today." Amber spoke quickly. "There's plenty of things to eat at the carnival."
"Yeah, and we're big enough to make our way to it alone. We know our way around the kingdom!" James added.
"I still haven't been to the carnival!" Sofia joined her siblings in convincing Baileywick to let them go. "At least not as a princess. Last year I went to pick apples with Aunt Tilly and missed the whole thing!"
"You three are royalty, you know that we can't let anything happen to you." Baileywick held on to his point.
"And it won't." James added, but Baileywick ignored him.
"Even your parents always have an escort with them wherever they go. And it's almost always me." Baileywick returned. "Now to the dining room, and your parents will be there in just a minute." He told them. The children sighed and reluctantly obeyed.

At the breakfast table Amber and James were eating way faster than they normally did. Sofia and their parents were looking at them questionably, while eating at their usual pace. In all the hurry Amber still managed to appear elegant, while James... didn't.
"James, why are you eating so fast?" King Roland II addressed the soon-to-be elephant in the room.
"We can't waste any more time. We must get to the carnival as soon as possible!" James answered with his mouth full.
"Manners, James." His mother, Queen Miranda, warned him.
The king laughed at his son. "But James, the carnival is staying in the kingdom for the whole day! You'll have plenty of time to visit it, even if you don't eat so fast."
"But there's so many rides and games and food that we need to try!" Amber backed her brother up, which in general was a rare occurrence. "And Sofia has been a princess for almost two years and has never been to the carnival with us! She missed it last year because she was with Aunt Tilly, and we all want to get there as soon as possible today." She begged in the most annoying shrill voice that she could speak in.
"That's right!" Sofia confirmed. She didn't have the impressive manipulation skills of her sister - at least not yet - so she did what she could.
"I understand that you're impatient, but you're not changing our minds. Breakfast first." Queen Miranda told the children.
The twins groaned in disappointment and continued eating their food a little slower.

"Who else is coming with us?" Sofia changed the topic.
"I was thinking just Baileywick and the two coachmen. Why?" King Roland replied.
"Could Mr Cedric come too?" Sofia said.
"Why would you want Cedric to come?" King Roland asked her, dissatisfied by the idea. "I mean, he can come, but why?"
"I don't know. He hasn't gotten out of the castle in a while, I think this would be a perfect time for him to go out a little!" Sofia explained.
"Right." King Roland responded, trying to hide his disappointment. The next to last thing he wanted was having to drag Cedric around with him for the whole day. But the last thing he wanted was to refuse Sofia such a wholesome request. She seemed to really like Cedric, for reasons beyond King Roland's comprehension. "Sofia, are you done eating?" He asked her after a moment of consideration.
"I am." She smiled back at him and put her napkin down on the table.
"Then why don't you go and ask Cedric to come with us while we finish?" King Roland suggested.
"Okay!" Sofia happily jumped off her chair and skipped away to Cedric's tower.

There was a knock on the door of Cedric's workshop, surprisingly followed by silence.
"Who in the world could that be?" Cedric murmured to himself, feeling more annoyed than usual. It was too early in the morning. "Come in!" He shouted to the person on the other side of the door.
"Good morning, Mr Cedric!" Sofia greeted him as she let herself in.
"Princess Sofia, what a surprise!" Cedric answered with a little too much sarcasm in his voice, but just enough so that Sofia couldn't realize he wasn't being serious. "What could I possibly help you with in these early hours of the morning?" He asked with the fakest smile on his face.
"I was wondering if you would come to the carnival with us today." Sofia said.
Cedric sighed. "Princess, I am a Royal Sorcerer. I don't spend my time at carnivals." He declined her offer less politely than was necessary. "I'm sure you will have fun anyway." He said and turned his back at her to clean up his desk a little.
