"How do I start the conversation? Like, how do you actually break up with someone?" I gazed up at Asher's face as I asked, wanting to know what he thought.
He ran his hand through my hair absentmindedly and looked down at me as I lay my head in his lap. He shrugged. "Be honest, I guess. Best way to do it."
I rolled my eyes. "I don't think I can be. I mean, how do you think she'll take it if I told her I wanted to date guys?"
Asher sighed. "I don't think she'll take it very well."
I nodded in agreement.
We were in my room, school books spread all over the bed and floor. We were supposed to be studying for the chemistry test next week. Instead, Asher was sitting on my bed, back against the headboard, while I lay on the back across my bed with my head on his lap. He kept running his hand through my hair and I liked it. If anyone else touched my hair, they were asking for their ass to be kicked. But when Asher did it .... It was comforting enough to send me to sleep. Everything was just ... different when he did it.
After we came out to each other at the weekend, I just really wanted to spend all my time with Asher. And I was trying to think of ways of letting Chloe down gently so that I could do it. Asher, on the other hand, seemed to not care as much about Sofia's feelings.
"Think I'll just tell her that guys kiss better than she does." He'd just shrugged at me when I'd asked him how he'd break it off with Sofia.
I'd been horrified. "You can't say it like that!"
He'd shrugged again. "How else am I supposed to tell her? In case you hadn't noticed, she doesn't take hints."
Asher moved slightly now, stretching his back and getting himself more comfortable on the bed. "Maybe just tell Chloe that you want to break things off because it's not her, but you."
I eyed him. "That's too cliched, man."
"But it's the truth." It was. It really wasn't her at all. It was me and my sexuality.
"Has Chloe ever asked you for sex?" Asher's question threw me off guard.
"What?"
He looked down at me. "Has she, you know, pressured you into having sex or anything?"
I shook my head. "No."
"Have you initiated anything before? Has she?"
Another shake of my head.
His fingers stopped in my hair and started to massage my scalp. "Do you think maybe she knows something?"
I frowned. "Like what?"
"Like maybe she knows you prefer guys and that's why she's not been asking for your dick?"
I ... didn't know what to say to that. Chloe had never been pushy, never asked for anything. A couple of kisses, a couple of hugs and she seemed happy enough. Did she really not ask for anything because she suspected something? But if she did, then surely she would have said something? If I was being a real shitty boyfriend, then she wouldn't have stayed with me? Would she?
I looked up at him incredulously. "What the fuck?"
Asher chuckled. "Don't girls usually ask for something after seeing a guy for a while?" He shrugged. "Just seems weird that she's not been begging for it after all this time."
"What do you know about girls?"
He laughed. "Good point."
He went back to stroking my hair, tugging on the strands, rubbing his fingers in my scalp.
