Nobody could possibly imagine the thoughts of Starr Kimens, not even Starr herself. Starr Kimens mother had a lot to do with the fear she buried underneath all the gold her heart had to offer.
Snap. Flash. Starr recalls the time her mother made her stand near a tree and take a picture with a woman she claimed to see while Starr was only seven.
Snap. Flash. Starr recalls the moment her mother ripped her hair out of her scalp before getting dragged out of the house by paramedics.
Snap. Flash. Starr recalls never seeing her mother again. She recalls her father kneeling to her level, while in the living room. She recalls being only ten when he told her, "Mommy killed herself."
Snap. Flash. Starr recalls her eleven-year-old brother simply staring down at the grave with no tears leaving his eyes.
She recalls... she recalls.
She's now recalling this very moment when her father said, "I got a call from Deputy Hicks, Tara was attacked last night."
Her heart drops, eyes wide, "what...what?"
"She's in surgery." Jin caressed his daughter's shoulder, a look of sympathy deep in his eyes. "As long as you don't have a test today, I'll let you stay home."
"Oooh, I heard the words stay home, I like the sound of that." Arlo found his way down the stairs, the strap of his backpack on one shoulder.
Jin squints. "Not you, Arlo. Get to school."
"Come on," Arlo complains, "why does she get to stay home and I can't."
