Something inside of me snapped awake. I opened my eyes to hear the dying nicker of Wild Survivor, one telling me to stop dying. I wanted to see her but I couldn't move. An EMT asked what hurt. I was about to say everything but my mind was too disjointed. He repeated the question and I pointed to my leg that was crushed and I put my hands on my head.
I was being picked up and carried over somewhere. I softly opened my eyes and I was being carried over to an ambulance. My vision darkened again.I awoke to the beeping noise of the heart monitor. I opened my eyes and I found myself staring into a white washed wall. I heard moment next to me and I moved my head in that direction. I moaned, it was Mady, my head spun more than before. Mady came and pulled her chair right next to the bed.
Mady and I had been good friends since middle school. I kinda brought her into the world of horses, but she has seemed content with her job of training.
The doctor came in and saved the awkward silence. She went to the other side of the bed and started talking. " Well Anna, it seems you have a major concussion." I tried to process this but my head still spun. She continued speaking, " Your left leg has been injured as well, but we need a specialist to take a closer look. I tried to process another medical explanation but my state of mind was in no state to think. The doctor spoke again, " Oh, I forgot to mention my name is Dr. S, and you're never going to stop are you?" I turned my head away from Mady, my vision focused on Dr. S and I wondered why she said that last part. Then I remembered, amidst the fog in my mind, my old friends from middle school were all here. " Rachel! You know I won't stop, but this time, it was a horse." Rachel raised an eyebrow and looked from me to Mady, " Did you drag Mady into race horses too?" I grinned, " Of course!" The room started spinning and I quieted down again. " Well, I need to talk to Mady about treatment and stuff, I want you to rest." With that, Mady and Rachel stepped outside the room and started talking quietly among themselves. Before I could rest, concern flashed through my mind. I sat there panicking, waiting for Mady to return. Before I could rest I needed to know some things. I thought about the accident. How I shouldn't have given Wild Survivor all of the rein. But that wasn't what I fretted about the most.
I waited about ten minutes in my pool of worry. Both girls walked in, " Anna, I must assume you had a headache. You should be resting." Rachel told me firmly but still in a soft tone. I replied with a dismissive flick of my wrist. Then I turned to Mady. Dizziness threatened to take away my vision but I fought it back. I needed to know the answer. I took a deep, shuddering breath, and composed myself. I mustered enough strength to get the words out before I choked on the words, " What happened to my horse?"
