I don't know how long I stayed wrapped in the warm blanket of sleep. I just knew that I didn't want to wake up. I didn't want to face my new reality. A reality with monsters, gods, and a father who ignored my existence for 12 years.
Sadly, the warm blanket of sleep was pulled away from me, and I woke up.
I looked up and saw Lee, he was carrying a bowl that had steam coming up from it and had a cup of apple juice in his other hand.
"Hey kid, sorry to wake you up," he said as he set the tray down on the table next to the bed. "I brought you some chicken broth and some crackers. I don't think your stomach can hold anything else right now, so just take it slow." He sat down next to me and handed me the warm bowl of broth.
"Thanks," I said, my stomach growling. I wasn't too annoyed at Lee for waking me up because the smell of the warm broth reminded my stomach of how hungry it was.
I scooped up some broth without even waiting for it to cool off. It filled me up with warmth and I started scooping it up faster. I was so hungry I probably looked a little crazy.
"Woah, what did I say," he said. "You're going to make yourself sick if you eat that fast. Plus, that was boiling hot how are you not burning your taste buds?" He asked, looking a mix of confused but mostly just amused.
I just shrugged. "I don't know, it just tastes good, and I'm hungry." I went back to slurping down my soup. Throwing any good manners away. I would not be making my previous foster mother happy, but I never made her happy anyway.
"So," he said as I gulped down the rest of my soup, not listening to Lee's warning to eat slower. "Are you ready to talk to people now?" He asked me as I nibbled on a cracker. In reality, I didn't want to talk about anything. I was trying really hard to just forget, but I couldn't.
I nodded my head, "yeah, that's fine." I said as I took a sip of my apple juice, but as the juice hit my tung, I noticed it wasn't apple juice. It didn't taste or have the texture of juice. It tasted like the cherry and blue raspberry slushies I would buy myself on a warm summer day. Except it tasted ten times better and seemed to warm up my whole body instead of cooling me down. I took a big sip, but Lee yanked it out of my hands before I could take another one.
"Okay that's enough," he said laughing. "That's nectar, the food of the gods. It heals demigods but will burn you up if you have too much," he explained.
"Oh," I said disappointedly, I really wanted more slushie juice.
Lee got up from his chair, "I'm going to get everyone. I'll be back soon." He left with a small wave.
Just after he left, a kid walked in. They seemed to be older than me but not by too much. They had curly long light brown hair and seemed a bit disoriented.
"Lee? Audrey? Jasper? Michael?" They called, but no one responded. Lee just left this place unattended, didn't seem very professional to me but I guess that's what happens when you leave a 16-year-old boy in charge of an infirmity.
"He left, he'll be back soon," I called from my bed. Their eyes landed on me, and they walked toward me.
"You're the new kid, right?" They asked.
I nodded. "Yeah, I'm Sara."
"I'm Bea, now if you excuse me, I have to go find some orange juice because the medics are not here doing their jobs and I'm low." They walked away, disappearing to the back.
After a few min, a group of people walked in. I only knew Audrey and Lee (I hadn't met anyone else yet). There were 2 other people who I did not know. Although it was only 4 people, I was already overwhelmed by the amount. They walked over to my bed and introduced themselves.
