There was a knock on your door as you finished pulling on your over-sized Christmas sweater. You practically hopped to the door and opened it. Your sister was the first who had arrived.
"Hey!" She said happily, going in for a hug.
"Merry Christmas, Alexis!" You replied as you returned her embrace. You two pulled apart.
"Am I the first one here?" She asked, looking around. "I brought presents!" She held up a big bag.
"Presents go under the tree," You smiled, letting her in.
Your living room was lit up with nothing but candles and the Christmas tree itself. The TV was playing holiday music and it was gently snowing outside the big window. The dinning room was full of dinner and snacks. And smells of cookies and cheese cake filling wafted from the kitchen. Everything was just the way you liked it. Well, almost. But it was understandable why the Doctor was busy. Besides, you'd see him in, at most, a week, and you could give him his present then.In around twenty minuets, everyone who was coming had arrived. Your mom, both of your older sisters (Alexis and Chris), your aunt, your little cousin, your grandma, and your grandpa. You guys decided to skip right to the presents. To be honest, you didn't really pay attention. The only thing you could think about was when you were going to give the Doctor his present. When your family noticed you smiling at your lap with no present in it, they got suspicious. You snapped back to attention after the last present was opened.
"You okay, kid?" Your grandpa asked.
"What? Oh! Yeah, I'm great! How about dinner?" You stood up and ushered everyone into the dining room. "I'll grab the turkey." You skidded to a stop by the counter and picked up the turkey. You walked back out and set it in the middle of the table. As echoes of "mm"s and "it smells good" went around the room, you heard the doorbell ring.
"Who could that be?" One of your sisters asked.
"Probably your father, he can never make up his mind," Your mother grumbled.
"Let's find out," You said walking over to the door curiously. The doorbell went off again before you opened it. Standing before you, you in a ridiculous purple Christmas sweater over his clothes, was your Doctor. You froze and blinked at him.
"Hello! Or was it 'Merry Christmas'?" He asked, looking around.
"Wha- Doctor? What are you doing here?" You asked, blinking repeatedly in confusion.
"It's Christmas! Where else would I be? ... It is Christmas, right?"
"Yeah," You laughed, "Pretty sure it is."
"Good! Can I come in?" He said sliding past you.
"Who's at the door?" Your grandma called from the dining room.
"Uhhh, it's my friend... That guy that's been showing me the area," You dragged him into the dining room and everyone turned to stare at him. "The Doctor... Remember?"
"You never told me about him," Your mother said curiously.
"I just did," You said awkwardly smiling. In all honesty, you hadn't breathed a word of the Doctor to any of your family, but you had learned on your travels that if you acted as though someone knew something, they'd likely play along.
"Hello!" He smiled, waving. "Can I stay for dinner?" You stiffened.
"I'd personally love for you to stay," Your aunt added, a smirk on her face. Of course, she could tell he was the one you had been thinking about the whole evening. You gave her a 'watch it' look.
"I don't mind either...," Chris, your sister, sighed. Her eyes were practically giant cartoon hearts. You sighed and went to grab the Doctor a foldable chair from the closet in the hallway in and to the left of the kitchen. You signaled for him to follow you. When you both reached the closet and were out of ear and eyeshot, you started to talk to him as you fished out the chair.
"Doctor, no matter what happens, you do not breathe a word of our traveling to my family." You spun around to find that he was standing right behind you. You raised your eyebrows. "Got it?"
He smiled. "Of course." You hugged him tightly. As he returned the hug you sighed.
"I'm glad you're here."
"You're my companion! Of course I'd be here!" You pulled away from him with a smile.
"Can you grab the raspberries? I waited until dinner to bring them out because my cousin warfs them down."
He grabbed the small bowl and followed you back out to the dinning room. You stopped in front of the table and turned to him, smiling. "Where do you want to sit?"
"Anywhere is alright," He put his hands behind his back. You smirked and turned to your family.
"WHO WANTS TO SIT NEXT TO THE DOCTOR?" You shouted to get their attention. Your sister's hand shot up in the air. You laughed and sat the chair in between your sister and your aunt. You stepped back and jokingly escorted the Doctor to his seat. You smiled at each other one last time before you went to the other side of the table to cut the turkey. You started giving your family their respected slices of turkey as the Doctor talked with your family.
"So, Doctor, how long have you two known each other?" Your aunt asked.
"Depends, what year is it again?" He said, smiling at her. You cleared your throat very loudly.
"We've known each other almost a year and a half," You told your aunt.
"Only that long?" The Doctor asked. You handed him his plate of turkey then grabbed your own plate.
"I know, it seems a lot longer," You contorted you face as you sat down across the table from him.
"Then it's really a shame we haven't met you sooner, Doctor," Your mom chimed.
"Diddo...," Chris sighed, resting her chin on her palm. Alexis, sitting on the other side of her, flicked her in the back of the head. "Ow!"
"Doctor, you missed opening presents," Alexis said, changing the subject. You almost spit out your drink. Everyone turned toward you as you jumped to your feet and slid out from behind the table.
"What is it?" The Doctor asked. You paused behind his chair as he looked up at you.
"Don't move, I will be right back!" You started running for the staircase up to your room.
"What are you doing?" He called to you.
"It's Christmas, you old fart!" You picked up his square present box, that you could've held in your hand. "You need to open your present!" You ran back down the stairs and around the corner to find him looking very surprised. You stopped in front of him and held out his present. He hesitantly took it with both hands, as if it were the most delicate thing he'd ever held. You realized your entire family was silent, watching you too. At this realization, your face turned beat red. The Doctor gently undid the ribbon around it and lifted off the lid. He gently pulled out the snow globe and held it up. Inside sat a miniature swing set. You looked between you and the globe.
"S-shake it," You told him. As he did, quiet sounds of a thunderstorm came from the globe as a little gray cloud formed and it started to downpour on the now swinging swings.
"How did you-" He started.
"Ba ba ba bop. Bup. Don't ask." You stopped him.
"But... Look at it!" Your sister said in awe. "How does it work?! There's actual rain! In the snow globe!"
"... It's a mirror trick!" You added quickly. You had actually gotten it from a planet you had been on with the Doctor, and managed to keep it a secret from him until then. Obviously you couldn't explain that to your family. You looked back at the Doctor to find that he was smiling at it. He shook it every few seconds to keep it going. He liked it. You had to stop yourself from letting out a huge sigh of relief. You had had absolutely no idea what to get him. To know that you'd actually gotten him something that made him happy, made you beyond happy. "Merry Christmas, Doctor." He smiled at you and put the snow globe back in it's box, and put the box in his jacket pocket. You were just about to call this the end of this story, until the Doctor pulled out a different present box. It was flatter, and a rectangle. It's ribbon was just a darker shade of the TARDIS blue color that the ribbon on his present was. He stood up and got really close to you, before setting the box in your hands and wrapping his hands around yours. He placed a long kiss on your forehead, and you heard your entire family give a collected "awww". He pulled away and looked into your eyes.
"Merry Christmas, Ms. Emotional...," He cooed. He then sat down in his chair and gestured toward the box in your hands. And you looked at the box and pulled off the ribbon, you thought about the nickname he had given you a long time ago. Ms.Emotional. To be honest, you hadn't heard it in a while and had forgotten it. You lifted off the lid of the box and your eyes widened at what was inside. Laying there, on a necklace chain, was a key that glowed a soft yellow. You knew immediately what it was. A key to the TARDIS. You looked up at him, eyes wide and watering.
"See? Humany Woomany," He sighed.
"Well, what is it?" Your mom asked. You didn't look away from the Doctor.
"A necklace. A beautiful, beautiful necklace." You pulled it out of the box and clicked it around your neck.
"A key?" Your sister asked, crinkling her nose.
"Yeah," You started, "A key." Your voice broke at the end as you rubbed your eyes. You pulled your hands away from your eyes and smiled at the Doctor. "How about a Christmas dinner?"
With that you, your family, and the Doctor had dinner together. And you realized by the time the night was over, that the Doctor was your family. And he always would be. No matter what he did.(A few things, 1. Sorry if you don't celebrate Christmas, my bad 😁. 2. Sorry this took so long... Heh heh. 3. My writing is kind of all over the place for this one, and there's probably mistakes left, right, and center, sorry about that. PS: Yes, Chris is also a girl's name 😉)
