Maya got up from the bed and headed to the bathroom. "I'll take a shower first," she said. The guy looked up from his phone. "No way, I don't want to use a shower after a stranger. Plus, girl take forever anyway," he said with a chuckle.
Maya rolled her eyes. "Fine, but you owe me one," she said, sticking her tongue out at him.
The guy grinned. "Deal."
The guy quickly finished his shower, feeling the warm water soothing his tired muscles. As he stepped out, he saw Maya standing on the balcony, her back facing him. He heard her soft sobs and frowned, wondering what could have upset her. He approached her quietly, hoping to eavesdrop on her conversation without being noticed.
The girl was on the phone, her voice choked with emotion as she spoke. The guy strained to hear her words, feeling guilty for invading her privacy but unable to stop himself.
"I don't know if you would ever listen to this, but uhmmm, I want you to know that I will always love you and I'm so sorry. I hope you can forgive me. Maybe not now but someday I hope you will," says Maya while sobbing over the phone.
The guy's heart ached as he realized that there was more to her than he had thought.
Suddenly, the girl ended the call and turned around, startled to see him standing there.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop," the guy said quickly, trying to act casual."It's okay," Maya replied, wiping away her tears.
"I didn't hear you come out of the bathroom."The guy gave her a small smile as he knocked on the glass door and gestured that she could take her turn in the shower. "You go ahead," he said, trying to give her some space.
"Thanks," Maya the girl said softly, before disappearing into the bathroom.
As the water started to run, the guy sat on the bed, lost in thought. He couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt and regret that weighed heavily on his heart. He wondered who the girl was talking to and what had caused her so much pain. He realized that he needed to know more about her, that there was more to her story than he had assumed. He got up from the bed and walked to the balcony, leaning on the railing and taking in the view. The city was waking up and the sounds of traffic and people going about their day filled the air. He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, trying to clear his head.
When he turned around, Maya was already sitting on the bed, her hair damp and tousled, scrolling through her phone. He cleared his throat, making his presence known.
"Feeling better?" Maya asked, looking up at him.
"Yeah," the guy said, walking towards her.
"I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for earlier. I shouldn't have acted like a jackass."
The girl shrugged. "It's okay. I know you didn't mean it."
The guy sat down next to her on the bed, feeling a sense of closeness and connection with her.
"So, can I ask you something?" he said tentatively.
"Sure, what is it?"
"I overheard you on the phone earlier. Is everything okay?"
Maya's face fell, and she looked away. "It's complicated," she said softly.
"I understand if you don't want to talk about it," the guy said, sensing her reluctance.
"It's not that," the girl said, turning back to face him.
"It's just that it's a long story, and I don't know where to begin."
