I couldn't protect her.

I didn't protect her.

I rocked back and forth in my seat outside her room. I gripped my hair in my hands and yanked.

God, why couldn't I have just protected her?

I couldn't step foot in her room. I couldn't stand to see her like that in that bed and know it was my fault. I was a coward and I knew it.

I would listen to her machines beep rapidly and watch as staff rushed into her room, and exit moments later.

I couldn't ask if she was okay.

I couldn't ask about her condition.

I couldn't even take deep breaths.
