Chapter 3
Lo and behold, Light was standing in front of an exotic mixture of people, with the mental note never to start an argument with Image because it would cost a whole lot of her sanity. Okay, so it was only three people, but that didn’t make them less exotic. The man in the middle was of the Human race, had skin the color of chocolate and these beautiful, intoxicating, dancing amber eyes. He introduced himself as “Fire” in a charming Northumberland British accent and gallantly kissed Light’s hand, not forgetting to scan her body while doing so. A flirt, she thought with a grin, her devious mind at work, this will be fun!
The man or rather boy of the Elf race to his left was seemingly middle European and like her slight of build. His hair was long and white-blond and his eyes were the palest blue she had ever seen. An albino?, she asked herself while he told her his name, I’ve never seen one before. His name matched his faded appearance: “Relic.” A young Relic, she mused, I wonder why he called himself that. But before she had the chance to ask him, she was being introduced to the Sprite on Fire’s right side. Her name was Venus, and that she was, though in a different sense: Short bright green hair, thick dark blue eyeliner and the delicate features of a Japanese beauty. A geisha, a courtesan, in Other she could have chosen to be adored. But instead she had fought herself up the man mass of Other. This would have been hard for Light to believe, had she not seen Venus’ stringy muscles under her loose white long-sleeve shirt and pair of light brown breeches.
“So,” Fire started. ”You’re dazzling Ligh-“
Light clamped a hand over his mouth, before he could speak out her whole name. The plaza they were standing in was crowded and she could still hear the occasional mumbles about the new List member. She did not want people to mob her.
“Don’t use my real name!” she hissed at the rest of the group.
“Don’t be like that, Light,” Image, the sadist, bellowed. “Light, you’re overreacting! We would never say your name too loudly.”
Light was about to hurdle herself at Image, when she realized that none of the players around them was staring. How’s that possible?, she asked herself, They are still whispering about me and yet they didn’t hear a thing? She looked around, searching through the crowd and realized something that she should have before.
“They don’t see us, do they?” she asked, burning her eyes into Image’s. She could have sworn she saw him look scared for a split second, but he changed his expression so fast that she couldn’t be sure.
“No they don’t.” Image smirked at her, putting his arm around her shoulders jokingly. Light shrugged it off and sunk back into contemplation.
“Force field.” she guessed. “Who made it?”
“Me,” Image answered levelly.
For a second, Light did not believe him. A buffoon like him was able to work a spell as powerful as this? Impossible. She looked him straight in the eyes, trying to find the lie in his statement. She couldn’t find it. I guess he could be a Mage, she thought submissively. He’s not wearing any weapons, but with a build like his she had immediately put him in the category Warrior. Looks can be deceiving, she sighed, no wonder he’s called Image.
Light hmphed and turned away from Image. She felt childish, but at that moment she didn’t care.
“Judging by the way you to act toward each other,” Venus started carefully, looking back and forth between Light and Image, “I’d say Image hasn’t asked you yet.”
Light’s pointed ears perked up. Ask her what? She glanced at Image who was biting his lower lip and looking unknowingly into the sky. Venus sighed at his reaction and turned her full attention to Light.
“Will you join our fighting troop?”
