Carrie had chosen to sit beside Dean on the field trip. They were on their way to the aquarium for a third grade science field trip.
Since Dean had first arrived, there was something about him that drew her to him. She couldn't explain what, but she liked being around him.
Earlier that week, she'd given him a note asking if he loved her and if he wanted to be her friend. She'd told him not to be afraid to take her by the hand if he wanted to. There had been two optional answers. Check yes or no.
Unfortunately, she hadn't gotten an answer as the teacher had taken the note. Subtly wasn't one of her strong suits.
The entirety of the field trip, she stayed by his side, which he didn't seem to mind.
The day passed by too quickly for her liking, and soon, they were back on the bus.
Once again, Carrie sat by Dean.
She looked at him, hesitated, then gave him a quick kiss in the cheek.
Dean looked at her. "What was that for?"
Carrie shrugged. "I don't know. But you can't tell anyone I did that."
Dean nodded. "I won't. I didn't get a chance to answer your note, and I'm sorry I didn't say anything until now, but the answer would've been yes."
Carrie grinned and happily shimmied in her seat.
Two days later, Dean was gone. His dad came to pick him up, and he left.
But the two never forgot each other.
After all, how could two destined to be ignore the pull of fate between them?
They reunited a decade later, and hit it off right away.
And to think it had all started with just a little note.
