Four hours. It had been four hours since JJ's mom stormed out of the apartment and JJ had barely moved a muscle.
Emily sat on the floor with her, swaying gently to calm her. She'd lost track of time and had no idea how long it had been. She didn't care, honestly. She only cared that JJ was okay.
At around 4 am was when Emily broke the silence. "Come on, we're leaving," she said, pulling JJ off the floor. She started grabbing bags that were sitting in the living room.
"Where?" JJ asked her, still slightly in a daze. "Somewhere away from here," she replied, handing JJ a bag that she'd already packed for her.
JJ decided not to question it, Emily had planned it and she trusted Emily.
Emily grabbed some grocery bags of food and the rest of the stuff they needed before taking JJ's hand and walking out of the apartment. She locked the door behind them and they went down to her car in the garage.
It was the beginning of December now. The air was chilly and made JJ shiver as she got into the passenger seat. She was still exhausted and her head felt foggy.
Emily put the bags in the back seat and started the car. She turned on the heater to warm it up. "Go to sleep," she whispered, pulling out and onto the road.
It didn't take long before JJ was out cold. Since it was the middle of the night the roads were empty and the drive was quiet.

When JJ started to wake up, for a second she completely forgot where she was. She looked out the window and saw the sun barely starting to rise, pink and yellow streaks displayed across the sky.
She noticed that the road was gone and so were all the buildings. It was just trees everywhere. They were in the woods.
She could hear early birds chirping away from high up. "Where are we?" she asked, turning to Emily. She felt peaceful here, in a way she couldn't describe. It just felt safe.
"We're in the woods," Emily told her. She got out of the car and walked around to open JJ's side.
JJ didn't need any answer past that. Honestly, she liked not knowing exactly where they were. It was away from everything and that was good enough.
"It's beautiful," she admired, getting out of the car and looking around. There were a couple inches of snow on the ground and dusted over the trees. It made everything around them glitter in the sun as it melted.
Emily took her hand and led her past a few trees to a cabin. It was made out of dark, fading wood with glass windows that reflected the forest around them. The perfect snow on top and few icicles hanging from the roof made it look like something out of a movie.
"Who's is this?" JJ asked curiously. "Mine," Emily responded. "I bought it a while ago before I'd even moved to DC. I've always loved coming here. It's calming. Nobody knows about it which means nobody can bother you."
Emily unlocked the front door and they both walked in. She flicked on the lights and JJ looked around the interior. Everything looked so surreal. The big wooden rooms were filled with rustic furniture and decorations. The stone fireplace really pulled it all together.
From the inside, the views from the windows were amazing. The trees and the slight fog over them from the cold were serene.
Emily went over and lit the fireplace to warm up the place. She crashed down on the couch in front of it and JJ curled up next to her.
