Pedri was at practice, feeling a bit distracted. His mind kept drifting to Nailea. He missed her terribly, and he was worried about how she was doing.
As he was running drills with his teammates, one of them asked him, "Hey man, how's your Nailea doing? Is she okay?"
Pedri felt a lump form in his throat. "She hasn't woken up yet," I say. "The doctors are doing everything they can, but it's been really hard."
Frankie nodded, looking concerned. "Is there anything we can do to help?" Ansu asks.
Pedri shook his head. "Not really," I say. "But thanks for asking. It means a lot."
As practice went on, Pedri found that he was having a hard time focusing on the game. He kept thinking about Nailea, and wondering when she would wake up. He felt scared and alone, and he didn't know how to deal with his feelings.
After practice, he went to the hospital to see Nailea. She was still asleep, and she looked so small and fragile lying there in the hospital bed. Pedri felt tears welling up in his eyes, and he knew that he had to be strong for her. He took her hand and whispered, "I'm here, babe. I'm not going anywhere."
"Please come back to me."
Victoria walked into the room and saw Pedri sitting next to Nailea, holding her hand. Nailea was still asleep, and the room was quiet except for the sound of the machines beeping softly.
"Hey," Victoria said softly. "What are you doing?"
Pedri looked up, startled. "Oh, hey," I say. "I was just talking to her."
Victoria nodded. "Can I talk to her too?" she asked.
"Of course," I say, standing up to let her take my place.
Victoria sat down next to Nailea and took her hand. "Hey sis," she said. "It's me. I'm here with you."
She started talking to Nailea, telling her about her day and about what was going on in the world. She talked about how much she loved her and how much she missed her.
But Nailea didn't wake up. She just lay there, still and silent, her breathing shallow and slow.
Victoria looked up at me, tears welling up in her eyes. "It's not working," she said. "Talking to her isn't helping her wake up."
I put a hand on her shoulder. "It's okay," I say. "We just have to keep trying. She's a fighter, and she's going to wake up soon."
Victoria nodded, feeling a sense of hopelessness wash over her. She didn't know how much longer she could keep this up, talking to her sister day after day, with no response.
But she knew that she had to keep trying. Her sister was counting on her, and she couldn't give up on her now.
