"You can talk to me, you know."
"Huh?"
You and Aizawa were the last teachers left grading papers in the teacher's lounge. His seemingly random statement caused you to look up, confusion in your eyes.
"Where'd that come from?"
He runs his hand through his hair with a sigh. "Don't think I haven't noticed how different you've been today. We've shared a classroom for eight years, now. It's inevitable that we'd grow to know each other well enough to be able to see when something's wrong with the other."
You set your pen down, a smile playing on your lips. "I guess I can't hide anything from you, huh? You're right, I've been a bit off today," you say, standing up and pulling your arms above your head in a stretch.
"So, what's up?" Aizawa looks up at you from his seat, the usual tiredness in his eyes.
You sigh, wrapping your arms around yourself as you step away from him and look at the wall across the room. "I caught my boyfriend of a year cheating on me with the girl he told me a couple months ago I 'didn't need to worry about.'" The corners of your lips twitch up, and you fight a smile as tears roll down your cheeks. "Gosh, why am I crying? I'm sorry, Aizawa. I cry far too easily." You wipe at your tears with the palm of your hands, hiding your face from him. "I don't need to cry over a stupid... jerk..." you mumble, your voice trembling as your shoulders shake.
Aizawa stays silent for a minute, watching as you cry. He walks over to you and hugs you gently, looking above your head. "I'm not the best at comforting people, but just know I'm here for you. And if he couldn't see what an amazingly strong, kind, and beautiful woman you are, then he doesn't deserve you. Your greatness is so obvious that he must be blind to miss it."
You shake your head, a quiet chuckle escaping your lips as your wrap your arms around him. "I'm not that great. I'm just an idiot who gets cheated on."
"Hey, look at me." He demands, looking down at you. You don't move, so he grabs your chin and makes you look at him. "You're not an idiot. And you are that great. In fact, you frequently amaze me with your personality and actions. When I think there's no way to come back from something, you show that there is a way. You fix situations everyone thinks are unfixable. You help the students understand their schoolwork, you give them someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, you rescue people under attack and even just help people in need of things like money, clothes, food, and work, all the while dealing with your own problems. It's not often I see you taking a break. Listen to me: You are allowed to take a break. In fact, I encourage you to pause and take some time for yourself. Take some time to just focus on yourself without having to deal with other people's problems. You can't swim people to shore if you yourself are drowning."
You sniffle, more tears running down your face as he speaks. "O...Okay." You nod, closing your eyes and smiling at him. "I'll try that. But will you help me if I can't stop focusing on helping others?"
"I will. But you need to try to focus on yourself. If you don't even try, then I can't do anything to help, understand?"
"Mhm," you hum, hiding your face in your friend's chest as he releases your chin from his grasp. "Thank you," you whisper, "for being here for me today, Shota. I'm glad I met you."
"Any time, [name]. I'll be here whenever you need me. I'm glad to know you."
