Her heart pumped with an urgency that threatened to leave her chest. Her lungs burnt with the need to slow down and her legs ached as though they were running a marathon.
Delilah had just escaped the castle and she never intended to return.
A few weeks prior
Delilah's small feet carried her through the halls of the castle she lived in. "Mama? Where are you?" Her voice bounced off the walls of the corridor she was currently sprinting down. Her favourite yellow dress flowing just past her knees.
"I'm in the library!" A melodic voice sounded throughout the house as if she had spoken through an announcer. Delilah smiled bright and made her way down a hall full of paintings of her ancestors. Ranging back to the first King and Queen that ruled the land they lived upon.
Delilah come up to the doors at the end of the hall that led to the library. Large, dark-stained wooden doors stood before her tiny frame. The weight of the doors proving difficult for her to open easily. She shoved her own weight into the door to open it, revealing her Mother, the Queen, who had perched herself beside an open window.
Delilah adored her Mother, and she examined her as if she were the most beautiful creature to ever walk the Earth. Her Mother sat in an old wooden chair, a long white gown adorning her curvaceous body, kissing the floor where it ended. A shawl had been placed over the Queen's shoulders to prevent the cold from nipping her skin. Her deep red hair lay lazily over her shoulders as her bright green eyes bored into the matching ones of her daughters.
Delilah smiled and shouted to her Mother, "I have found you!"
The Queen set the book she had indulged herself with on a small table that she had placed beside her when she had retreated to the library earlier. She outstretched her arms, awaiting the impact of her ever-growing daughter.
Delilah had not wasted any time throwing herself into her Mother's arms and upon her lap was where she sat. "You have indeed found me, my little flower, what is it that you were needing?" The Queen had asked her daughter this question many times over the past few days. It seems as though her daughter had switched sides, initially being that of a Father's Daughter.
"I had hoped to find Xavier because he disappeared all of a sudden." Delilah frowned as she remembered her twin brother's retreating form from the bedroom they slept in. The Queen brought her soft hand to her daughter's cheek and pulled her daughters head towards her own, where she rested their foreheads against each other.
Delilah sighed in contentment as her Mother's calming touch brushed away all the worry the nine-year old seemed to have. The Queen stroked her daughters face lovingly as she replied gently.
"My little flower, there is no need for you to be upset. Your Father had summoned Xavier into his office to discuss a few things, shall we interrupt their special bonding?" The Queen had a mischievous smirk plastered across her face as she knew something that her daughter did not.
The King was planning a surprise for their little flower and Xavier wanted to participate.
The Queen stood as Delilah scooted off her Mother's lap. Delilah nodded up at her Mother excitedly, hoping that that was indeed what they were to do now. The Queen smiled back down at her only daughter and held a hand toward her for her to take.
Delilah giggled excitedly as she grasped her Mother's hand tightly. The Queen led them both towards the doors of the library. Just before they reached the doors, however, a menacing growl stopped them in their tracks.
