Chapter 5

The kids work on a color by numbers worksheet as I get their backpacks ready for dismissal.

It's been a stressful day with my coworkers taking or rearranging my stuff and a student tried to escape the school so I'm so thankful we have a half a day today.

I check the time and see we have 5 minutes until dismissal. "Ok everyone, it's time to pack up. Put your crayon boxes away and put your papers in your backpack."

The kids do as I asked and I cleaned up their tables.

We sing the goodbye song and one by one the kids parents pick them up until I just have Wyatt left.

After I had a talk with Jack's mother the bullying stopped and Wyatt was back to his old self.

I haven't seen or heard from Declan since our meeting 3 weeks ago, and I expected that because we don't need to reach out to one another unless something comes up.

I mean I could've made a move, but I think waiting to see what happens is the best thing.

I see Declan signing in to pick up Wyatt.

Speak of the devil.

Unlike his usual attire of dress shirts and pants he's wearing a tight grey t-shirt and worn jeans.

Damn.

He locks eyes with me and smiles. "Hey Natalie" He waved.

Hearing my name come off his lips gives me butterflies.

"Hey Declan, I'm surprised you're here."

"Yeah, I had the day off and wanted to spend time with Wyatt" He said.

"Well that's great, I hope you enjoy your day."

"Thanks" He smiled.

"Daddy, can Miss Thompson come with us to the park?" Wyatt asked him.

Declan rubs the back of his neck and glances in my direction then back to his son. "I'm sure she's busy bud" He said to him.

Wyatt folded his hands and turned to me, his blue eyes shinning. "Can you please come with us Miss Thompson?" Wyatt asked.

Ugh, how can I say no to him.

I turn to look at Declan even though I'm talking to his son. "As long as it's ok with your dad then I'd love to."

"Yeah it's fine with me, we'd love for you to come with us" He said

"Perfect, I'll just pack up my things and I'll meet you guys there, what park are you going to?"

"We're going to the one around the corner from here, but we're stopping at McDonald's for lunch first. Do you want anything?" He asked.

"Yeah, let me grab my purse and I'll give you some money" I said walking over to my cabinet I keep locked with my purse in it.

"Don't worry about it, I'll cover it" He said.

I raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?"

"Yeah, don't worry about it" He said.

"Ok, I'll get a cheeseburger without onions, small fry, and a medium sweet tea."

"Ok, we'll meet you over there in a little bit" He smiled.

I smiled back. "Ok sounds good."

They walk out of the classroom, but get stopped by Jenna in the hallway.

"Hey Declan! So good to see you" She said going in for a hug.

He maneuvered them so he could give her a side hug, and from the looks of it she wasn't happy about that, but quickly schooled her reaction.
