With their backs turned

You had fallen in love with a prince. Jung Hoseok was handsome, you would have no choice but to swoon over him. His beautiful, lightening smile was the epitome of happiness and he had no trouble with brightening the people's moods as he was often seen in the town in procession. But he could also be serious and level-headed when needed, which was equally attractive, if not more alluring.

You had the pleasure of meeting him. Your father was a high-status suit tailor and the King and Queen had requested him to custom make the King and his son, Hoseok, suits for the monthly ball. As the King thought that your father had done an amazing job, your family was invited to this ball. At said ball, you were busy marvelling at the room, intricately carved patterns crawling up the walls and shaping the ceiling, with gold painted in few places, splashing beauty and richness shamelessly. As you wondered around you spotted the large balcony. You stepped outside, the evening air chilling your skin, enjoying the view of the darkening blue sky that was starting to twinkle with stars.

"Excuse me," you heard a deep, clear voice behind you.

Turning yourself around on your feet, you saw the prince himself and you hastily curtsied out of respect.

"I heard you're the tailor's only child," Hoseok spoke enticingly, a gentle smirk on his face.

"Y/n," you said, curtseying again.

He reached for your palm, gently holding your fingers, bringing them to his mouth and kissing your knuckles. He held eye contact, which had you drawing in a quick breath. He kept your hand in his, tenderly fiddling with your fingers, looking down at them as if analysing them.

"Are you working in the trade?" he asked.

"I'm learning with my father, yes," you replied, your face heating up at the feeling of his fingertips.

"I wonder," he started, his smirk appearing again, "if I'll be able to personally experience these delicate hands at work."

Your eyebrows raised at the subtle, lewd remark, choking out a laugh.

"I had no idea that the prince was such a shameless flirt," you replied, completely flustered, which he found quite amusing.

"Well, I assure you that I am here to talk too," he walked to the edge of the balcony, leaning on it and angled his head towards you, his gleaming smile shining despite the dark of the night.

As the night grew old, you found that he was genuinely interested in you. He intently listened to what you said and conversation with him flowed easily. It was like talking to an old friend — or a lost love. The night ended with another kiss to your knuckles and words of meeting again, and the way your heart bubbled told you that you wanted that to be true.

Soon you were getting letters from him, organising secret rendezvous which usually took place at night, like reminders of the first night you met. Unlike the first night, you met outside of the city, under a sycamore tree. You lay next to each other, looking up at the night sky as they witnessed your forbidden meetings.

It wasn't long until you were sharing more than just your words. Kissing him felt like a midsummer evening, a breath of fresh cool air after a hot day, refreshing but with a hint of the hot day still remaining on your skin. Despite the fact that he was a huge flirt, the bond you both had was innocent and pure.

And it wasn't long until you expressed your love for each other. The euphoria rushing through your veins was indescribable. You sometimes thought you were both moving too fast but this was your way of living now, you had almost forgotten how you lived before Hoseok.

Your family was invited to the castle balls more frequently too. Now of course, you both knew what you were getting into when you gave your hearts to each other. Your relationship had to be kept a secret, Hoseok's parents would never support his love for a tailor's offspring—royalty would always be bound to royalty. So whenever you were both amongst the dancing or milling crowds, you could only risk linking pinkies behind your backs.
