03 | what has become of narnia
~•☆
EDMUND HAD DECIDED that, perhaps, standing around without any answers was too frustrating, so he was the first to return to exploring when everyone had settled into an uncomfortable, guilt-ridden silence. It didn't take him long to find something else just as intriguing.
Now, his brother helps him push aside a brick panel, sitting in front of a surprisingly well-held structure of sorts. When the cover is quickly abandoned against the wall, revealing yet another – this time wooden – door, Peter immediately works the lock to get it open. Unfortunately, as his siblings stand aside, he has no choice but to simply tear it up with a knife he produces from his pocket. June feels wrong even watching it, as though he is destroying something sacred and incredibly rare, and, considering how the largest monument of Narnia is nothing but a pile of rubble now, he might as well be, since the King is basically ruining the one last thing that is still intact.
Eh, to hell with it, June guesses, it's all gone anyway.
The wood is so old by now, it almost crumbles to dust under Peter's hands and small knife as he pokes a hole around the lock of the door. With very few short cracks, he is able to reach his hand through and get it open, allowing the sunlight to illuminate the first few steps of a semi-healthy stone stairway. Further down, it is pitch black, but June still is able to figure out where she's seen these two doors before.
Peter tears off a piece of his white shirt that hangs low beneath his school vest, tying it around a stick he picks up from beside his feet to create a torch, but... ❝Don't suppose you have any matches, do you?❞
June lifts an eyebrow. Why'd he tear his shirt without making sure he has everything he needs for the flambeau?
❝No, but,❞ Edmund opens his bag, revealing June's book he ''stole'' earlier (the girl narrows her eyes) and also a perfectly working torch, ❝would this help?❞
❝You might have mentioned that a bit sooner!❞ Peter raises his voice to an accusing laugh, shaking his head as all the girls exchange humored glances and flinging the torch away, into the bushes. Edmund, as the sole carrier of their only light source, begins leading the way and they follow him one by one, June finding herself the third to be walking in after both Pevensie boys. She drags her hand against the stone wall of the narrow staircase as they descend, a wishful smile pulling at her lips. She really hopes their treasure room is still intact.
The first set of the spiral stairs take the five rulers to an almost balcony, with pillars still standing tall and going down to the very first level of the treasure room, where five statues stand all around the circular room below their feet. June breaks out into a grin. Bless the gods of hidden entrances. Despite the amount of rubble that must have fallen from the tremors of the ground when the castle was attacked, thus destroying the second floor of this place and creating the new balcony, the chests appear untouched.
