The campus was still sleeping, the dorms silent, the halls empty. The soft glow of dawn had just started to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in shades of red and pink. I stood in front of the glass windows of the physics building, looking at the schedule on my phone.
Dr. Morris, the esteemed professor with a sharp wit and an even sharper intellect, had a class at 8 AM, but he was known to arrive early, a habit instilled by years of meticulous academic work. The assignment was clear: ensure he didn't make it to the morning class.
My phone buzzed, a message from Yor. Her dry humor at this hour was both a constant source of surprise and annoyance. "Pulling an all-nighter again?" she asked. "Careful, or you'll start looking like the undead, and then who will sit with you in the dining hall?"
"Like you have better company," I retorted, typing fast. Her refusal to take this assignment was still fresh, a bitter aftertaste that hadn't quite disappeared. Yor and I had worked on everything together, shared everything, but this was something I had to deal with on my own. She seriously needed the extra help for her midterms. I guess I understood that.
The physics building's side door opened. I pocketed my phone and moved into the shadows, blending in seamlessly. The scent of fresh coffee filled the air. Dr. Morris, true to form, arrived early. The halls echoed his rhythmic footsteps, like the final countdown of a ticking time bomb. Each thud brought me closer to my assignment, a growing sense of unease settling in my stomach. This was different, somehow, from all other jobs.
And then, as Dr. Morris moved towards his office, he froze. His head turned, eyes narrowing at a darkened corner. I followed his gaze, pulse quickening. What had he seen? I blinked, straining my eyes, and then...laughter. It echoed in the empty hall, bright and clear. A girl stepped out from the shadows, a large travel mug in her hand. "Dr. Morris, you scared me! I thought you were a ghost," she said, feigning a shudder.
Sasha Cegielski. A straight A student, known for her cheery demeanor and never-ending supply of coffee. Little did I know, she was also a CIA operative.
Sasha didn't skip a beat as she handed over her second travel mug to Dr. Morris. He accepted it with a smile, muttering a thanks. She chatted him up, expertly diverting his attention away from the shadows and back towards the mundane safety of coffee and early morning classes. I exhaled slowly, creeping away, confusion replacing the adrenaline that moments ago had been pumping through my veins.
Back in my dorm, I tried to make sense of what had just transpired. Sasha. Brilliant, cheerful, overly caffeinated Sasha was with the CIA? It seemed ludicrous. But then, so did a pair of university assassins. I laughed, a bitter sound that bounced off the bare walls of my room. Yor would've found this hilarious. But she wasn't here. She had chosen to stay out of it, leaving me to navigate this mess on my own.
On my bed lay an unopened envelope. A letter from home, marked with the insignia of our homeland. With trembling hands, I tore it open. Inside was a photograph of my younger sister, her smile bright, untouched by the war ravaging our country. A surge of determination filled me. I was doing this for her, to ensure her future remained as bright as her smile.
Sleep eluded me as I prepared for the day. The weight of the task was heavier now. It wasn't just about Dr. Morris anymore. There was now an added layer of intrigue with Sasha in the mix. I had to be more cautious, more stealthy. The morning sun was up by the time I made it back to the physics building. I could hear the rustling of students and professors preparing for classes, a normal day at the university. But nothing about this day was normal for me.
Lunch came and went, a blur of faces and voices. Yor sat opposite me in the cafeteria, her jokes falling flat in the tense air. She could sense the change in me. "You okay?" she asked, her tone serious for once.
