"Evelyn, grab me a coffee."
"Evelyn, grab Patty for me."
"Evelyn, get me those officers."
"Evelyn, take that call for me."
"Evelyn, this."
"Evelyn, that."
I'm going crazy. Who knew being the Mayor's assistant would be this difficult.
I thought it was a blessing from God that I could be the Mayor's assistant at 19 years old. Usually, the Mayor gets an assistant who's in her 40s. I always envied them.

But now I see that the reason they went for the job was because they had nothing else to live for, or no other way to make a living.

That's alright. God gives us all trials, right? And this is just one of them. And plus, I'm earning a lot of money. Maybe I will be able to go to college.

Not that my family doesn't have money, but my parents told me I'd only be able to go to college if I paid with my own money. I spent so long doubting id get the chance, I never even thought about what I wanted to major in.
Engineering?
Language?
Psychology?
Who knows?

Maybe I'll go into journalism! I've always loved writing and interviewing! Yes, that's perfect!

"EVELYN!" The mayor shouted.

"Yes, Mayor, sorry mayor."

"It's- it's fine...just get me a coffee," he rubbed his temples. "Just please try to stay focused."

I nodded. I took his mug, cleaned it, and took it to the coffee machine.
Two sugars. One quarter cup of creamer. Just the way he likes it.

I waited for it to cool off a bit before taking the mug to him. This is his fourth cup today. I don't think that's healthy. Well, I'm not one to judge; I don't drink coffee, but this seemed rather excessive.

"Thank you, Evelyn. Much appreciated," He smiled. "How's your brother doing, by the way?"

The Mayor occasionally started conversation so the job wasn't too boring or rigorous.
"He's doing good," I smiled. "He's going to audition for the spring play, he told me."

The mayor seemed interested. "What's the play?"

"The Newsies. He wants to play the role of Spot."

"Ah, The Newsies! I know that film! I didn't know they turned it into a play."

It's moments like these that make this difficult job worth it. The mayor is usually short tempered, but he can be quite friendly sometimes. "Yup! It is a pretty good one, if I do say so myself."

"Do you have the dates of the shows? If your brother gets a role, I'd love to see it!" The mayor seemed happy.

"Not yet, but I'll keep you updated!" I looked at the clock. "Oh, it's 8 already?"

The mayor softly chuckled. "Well, you're free to go. Your brother's probably waiting for you."

"Thanks, Mr. Evermore!" I threw on my coat. "See you tomorrow!"

"See you tomorrow, Evelyn!"
