APRIL 17TH, 1994
Marta tapped her fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of the song playing from the radio, that was trying, but failing to drown out the noise of rain pouring down on the car.Marta: "Oh, there she is." she hummed, while watching an eight year old Kenna exit the school, before quickly flipping the hood of her jacket up and rushing towards Marta's car, "Hi, mija."
Kenna: "Hi, mama."
Marta: "How was school?" she asks, as her daughter fastened her seat belt.
Kenna: "Fine."
Marta: "Fine, that's all I get?"
Kenna: "Well, it was good. I got an 'A-' on my math test." she smiles, as Marta drove out of the parking lot and down the street.
Marta: "Oh, that's amazing, Kenna."
Kenna: "It would've been better if we could've gone outside for recess." she sighs, glancing at the rain out the windows.
Marta: "I know, it's been pouring all day. My students had to stay inside too. I wouldn't be surprised if the power's out at home." she says, as Kenna watches a lightning bolt flash in the sky, "But if it's not, I want homework done before dinner."
Kenna: "Mama." she whines, but quickly stops when seeing Marta's pointed look.
Marta: "MacKenna, I'd rather you get it done right away so I don't have to go hunting for those damn flashlights."
Kenna: "Okay." she sighs.
Marta: "I told your father it was gonna pour and that we were going to need them, but he just had to watch the rest of the Cubs game."
Kenna: "They won."
Marta: "Well at least he'll be happy about that, seeing as today's game is definitely being postponed." she remarks earning a laugh from her daughter, as she turned down a street, "Maybe I'll make him pick us up something from that bakery on Armitage."
Kenna: "La Estrella?"
Marta: "Sí." she says, causing Kenna to grow a huge smile and nod her head feverishly, "But only if you do all your homework."
Kenna: "Mama," she shakes her head with a giggle, causing Marta to chuckle as well. Soon enough laughter from both drowned out the noise of the rain until a horn honking quickly interrupted it. Before Marta could react, headlights from another car were rapidly heading towards them, making the two gasp before the young girl screamed, "Mama!"
Marta: "MacKenna!" the mother shouts, just before the car crashed into them.

Slowly regaining consciousness, Gabby grunts while pushing the gurney off her leg. Finally getting it free, Gabby looks around at the aftermath from the crash.
Gabby: "Kenna? Shay?" she calls out, before hearing a painful moan, "Kenna."
Kenna: "Ow." she groans, while going to sit up.
Gabby: "MacKenna." she says, going over to her as Kenna gives her a look like she had just seen a ghost, "Kenna."
Kenna: "I'm fine." she shakes her head, snapping out of her brief trance, "Where's Shay?"
Gabby: "Shay."
Kenna: "Shay." she calls, as Gabby made her way over to the blonde, while Kenna slowly stood up.
Gabby: "Hey. Shay, sweetie. Sweetie. Hey. Shay, Shay. You're gonna be okay. You're gonna be okay." she repeats, as another ambulance finally drove up, "You're gonna be okay. You're gonna be okay."
