My Brother's Keeper Part 3

"Well I guess we could talk about you and your brother's relationship. Or is that too much for you?"

"Oh no, it's fine. We actually have more of a boss-employee relationship than a brotherhood now."

"Well, why is that?"

"I don't know."

Before I could even rebuttal, in walked Duane with the groceries. Saved by the bell, I guess.

"Alright, I wasn't able to get everything in your list but, I was able to get you feminine products, your favorite ice cream, some spinach, ranch dressing, cucumber and tomato, seasonings and lastly, a Donna Summer album." Duane said.

"That's it? What happened to the rest of it?" I asked.

"They didn't have everything. I'm sorry."

"That's alright, it's not your fault." I assured him before getting up and trying to get the groceries.

"Well why didn't you go somewhere else to get it?" Prince asked.

"I'm just trying to do my job, that's all, and that wasn't where she wanted us to go." Duane mentioned.

"Well, you should've looked more into it." Prince's tone changed and I could hear the tension rising in his voice.

"Listen little brother, I just-"

"I thought we agreed that you wouldn't call me that?"

"I never agreed to anything!" Duane said with his voice raised just a little bit.

"Well, What we agreed on was to call me sir. I said to everyone in the house, including you."

So is the issue over a nickname? From the looks of it, it seems kind of childish to me. But, this isn't my fight to fight in the first place anyway.

"Yes you did. But I never agreed to that. I'm family. Blood family. I'm not like these other people, Prince."

"But you're still my employee though, and this is still working hours, Duane."

"And I understand that but, come on bro, I've spent almost two hours looking for this stuff, give me a break, man!"

By interjecting, I told Duane that everything was fine and that, he didn't have to apologize again. But I couldn't really say much to Prince because, that could result in the both of us getting put out.

Both of them stayed silent until Prince took it upon himself to shrug his shoulders before walking away from us to wherever he was going to go.

I turned to Duane and told him that everything was fine for the last time and just decided to say my goodbyes before leaving. Duane nodded his head and wanted to escort me outside but before we did, I thought it was only fair for me to say goodbye to Prince.

"Listen, I don't normally do this, but I would have to escort you to say goodbye because, his room is literally upstairs in his luxurious apartment and he doesn't let anyone up there. The only way that I even get to go up there is if he has a guest that needs to be escorted. I've never even seen the inside of his bedroom." He mentioned.

"Okay." And with that being said, he escorted me there and went up the elevator, only to end up at a purple door with a yellow sign on it. And before I was about to knock on the door, Duane stopped me and said to knock lightly. And after knocking on the door, we could hear on the other side of the door, Prince's voice yelling and wanting to know who it could possibly be on the other side of his door.

"Hey, it's me. I just wanted to say goodbye before leaving." I said.

There was a few seconds of silence before we heard the click of a door and out walking comes Prince coming towards me and giving me a hug and a kiss on the cheek before he disappears back into his room. But he then proceeded to clench something in my hand and whispered into my ear that I need to wait until I get home to read it.

I nodded my head slightly and said my goodbyes before leaving with Duane. And as we're walking back down to the downstairs, Duane assured me again and said that he was sorry for the inconvenience and that it wouldn't happen again for when the next time I come...whenever that'll be.

So I give him a hug and said that I would be fine walking to my car. And as I'm heading to my car, I remembered the note that Prince gave to me was still in my hand and I had the urge to open it up and read it.

I just can't help but wonder what was inside...But then, I remember what he said and followed through it before I got in my car and drove off into the night.
