As the sun dipped low in the sky, casting a warm, golden glow on the cobblestone streets, Max's footsteps echoed with a sense of urgency as he made his way back to the tavern. His heart was a heavy stone within his chest, worry and anger entwining like ivy around his every thought. The image of his father preparing for the impending duel haunted his mind, and the weight of his family's fate seemed to bear down on him with every step.

Upon entering the dimly lit tavern, the warmth and inviting atmosphere did little to assuage his unease. Murmurs of conversation and the clinking of glassware filled the air, but it all seemed distant and unimportant to him.

From a shadowy corner, a familiar, sultry voice called out, sending a shiver down his spine. "Ah, Max, my dear, come and sit with me," Zerou purred, her tone a dangerous dance between allure and threat. Knowing that refusing her invitation would only provoke her further, Max reluctantly made his way to her table and took a seat across from her.

With a tantalizing smile, Zerou placed a delectable slice of strawberry cake before him. Its vibrant red hue stood out starkly against the dark wooden table, drawing his eyes to it like a moth to a flame. Max eyed the dessert warily, his suspicion written plainly across his face. "Is this poisoned?" he asked, his voice tight with tension.

Zerou let out a melodramatic, sarcastic sigh. "Yes, Max, it's poisoned – with sugar." Her tone was playful, but Max found no amusement in her words, the bitterness of his resentment towards her still lingering in his heart.

Feeling the weight of his emotions, Max's voice trembled as he spoke. "You know I would do anything to save my father, to take his place in the duel. Can't you see that?"

Zerou's expression softened ever so slightly, her eyes betraying a hint of empathy. "I understand your situation, Max, but I cannot cancel the assassination or the duel. My hands are tied."

As she spoke, she slid closer to him, the creaking sound of her rubber suit filling the air. Her breath, muffled by her mask, was warm against his ear as she whispered, "Everyone is watching us, not just me. My client has plans for your family, starting with your father, Antrodos. You must be careful."

Moving away but remaining seated with Max, Zerou began to eat the cake. She glanced at Max, who had yet to touch the dessert, and asked sarcastically, "What's wrong? Do you have diabetes or something?"

Max groaned loudly, his patience wearing thin. With a heavy sigh, he finally relented and joined Zerou in eating the slice of cake. As the sweet taste of strawberries filled his mouth, it did little to dispel the sour taste of fear and uncertainty that gnawed at his heart. The future was a looming storm cloud, and Max could only hope that his family would weather the coming tempest together.

The ancient timbers of the tavern creaked with age, and the dimly lit interior was a kaleidoscope of shadows and flickering candlelight, lending an air of mystery and intrigue to the establishment. Max shifted uneasily in his seat, the weight of his newly acquired harness pressing against his body. He tried to excuse himself politely from Zerou's company, explaining that he needed to train in order to defeat her in the upcoming duel.

Zerou laughed heartily, the light blue hair that was hidden beneath her fox ear-shaped hood dancing around her shoulders as she playfully grasped the waistband of his pants and pulled him firmly back down into his seat. "Sit down, Max," she urged, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You should know that my client didn't just send me to kill your father; they'll send more assassins, though none quite as skilled as I am." Her voice was dripping with sarcasm, yet beneath the mockery, Max could sense genuine concern.

"I promise to fight your father fairly in the duel," Zerou continued, her tone growing more serious. "But you, your little sister Agnes, and your lovely Lucianna must be cautious. There will be others who will try to weaken Antrodos before our battle, giving me an unfair advantage. And I prefer a fair fight."
