Petunia Dursley nee Evans really didn't know what came over her and her normal husband to be here. In her freakish sister's freakish home. She didn't even want to be here, but she was invited so she could meet her niece. But as far as she knows, her sister and her husband were barren, so they must have come up with even more freakish things to have that child.
She won't be close to the child and that family, was what she and her husband have said to themselves, but she didn't know why she was still holding Little Octavia. The baby was something they didn't expect, they already knew she wouldn't look like the Potters, but the little girl was simply adorable. Lovable even.
As Petunia held Octavia in her arms, she couldn't help but feel a strange connection to the little girl. She had always been jealous of her sister and her magical abilities, but seeing this innocent child, Petunia couldn't help but feel a sense of protectiveness towards her.
"You're a beautiful little girl, aren't you?" Petunia whispered, smiling down at Octavia.
Octavia gurgled in response, her tiny hand reaching out to grab Petunia's finger.
"Petunia, do you want some tea?" Lily called from the kitchen.
Petunia nodded, tearing her gaze away from the baby. As she walked to the kitchen, she couldn't help but think about how she had always pushed her sister away, even when she was reaching out for a connection. Maybe it was time to let go of the bitterness and try to build a relationship with Lily and her family.
As they sat in the cozy kitchen, sipping on tea, Petunia found herself asking about Octavia's likes and dislikes, her personality, and her quirks. Lily and James were happy to answer, and they all spent the next few hours chatting and laughing together.
As the night drew to a close, Petunia stood up, handing the sleeping Octavia back to her sister. "Thank you for having me," she said, a small smile on her face.
"Anytime," Lily replied, giving her sister a hug.
As Petunia left the house, she couldn't help but feel a sense of regret for all the time she had wasted, pushing her sister away. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but maybe it was time to start building a relationship with her family, even if they were different from her.
As she closed her eyes and remembered Octavia's happy face, Petunia knew that this little girl would be the bridge that would bring them together. She made a silent promise to herself to be a part of Octavia's life, and to be there for her sister and her family. By blood or not, that little girl is her niece.
"That little girl is something, ain't she Pet?" Vernon asked his wife. Like his wife, he was having doubts about his negative feelings towards magic and the like. But that little girl, Octavia, made magic something more bearable, if it means accepting magic to meet that little girl again, he doesn't mind. He does wonder if the Potters would allow playdates for the cousins.
"She's quite lovely," Petunia had a small smile on her face.
Vernon smiled back, relieved that his wife seemed to have softened her stance towards the magical family. "Maybe we should invite them over for dinner sometime," he suggested.
Petunia looked at him, surprised. "Really?"
"Yes, really. It's about time we start accepting them for who they are, and maybe even try to understand them better," Vernon said, taking Petunia's hand in his.
Petunia felt a warmth spread through her chest, as she realized that maybe her husband was right. Maybe it was time to let go of the past and embrace the present. "Yes, let's do that," she said, smiling at Vernon.
As they walked back to their car, Petunia felt a sense of hope for the first time in a long time. Maybe, just maybe, they could build a relationship with their magical family. And it all started with one little girl, who had the power to bring them all together.
And a few days later, they did bring Dudley with them to play with his cousin, of course they had to repeatedly tell the boy to be gentle to his cousin, and to their surprise, he is.
Dudley would only shout if he wants Octavia to be comfortable in the place where they are. The Dursley couple were pleasantly surprised when James did some charms to cool the children down so they wouldn't be fussy.
As the cousins played together, Petunia and Lily sat at the kitchen table, chatting and catching up on lost time. It was strange, but it felt like they were back in their childhood home, giggling and whispering secrets to each other.
Petunia couldn't help but feel grateful for the little girl who had brought them all together. Octavia was a blessing in disguise, and she had shown Petunia that family was more important than any differences they may have.
As the evening drew to a close, Petunia and Vernon said their goodbyes, promising to come back soon for another visit. They hugged their family tightly, and Petunia felt tears prick at her eyes as she realized how much she had missed out on all these years.
As they drove back home, with them promising Dudley that they would visit his little cousin soon, Petunia and Vernon talked about the evening, and how much they had enjoyed spending time with their family. They both agreed that it was time to let go of their prejudices and accept their magical family for who they were.
And as they settled into bed that night, Petunia couldn't help but think about the little girl who had changed everything. Octavia had brought them together, and she knew that she would always hold a special place in their hearts.
From that day on, the Dursleys made an effort to be a part of Octavia's life, and to be there for their magical family. They still had their differences, but they had learned to accept and respect each other. They just hoped that nothing would take this happiness away from them.
Petunia looked at the calendar, and looked at her husband, "Halloween is in a few months, should we celebrate with the Potters?"
